COVID-19: Nigeria’s ruling elite eye self-isolation over Kyari

Nigerian ruling elite is in hibernation as its top members are in self-isolation for making contact with the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari, who has been diagnosed with the rampaging Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The self-isolation also involves members of their staff and their families.

Already, even though President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo are not carriers of the dreaded disease as they are confirmed to be negative, they have gone into voluntary self-isolation.

Already, about 25 top politicians and public servants and their families are on surveillance for allegedly coming into contact with the powerful Chief of Staff after his return from his recent trips to Germany and Egypt.

The news that Malam Kyari has tested positive to Coronavirus has left many wondering who could be the next as the virus is transmitted through person-to-person contact.

To compound matters, there are rumors that dozens of National Assembly members who are fond of junketing around the globe already have the virus and are refusing to isolate themselves.

The news of Malam Kyari contacting Coronavirus sent shock waves through the political and business elite as the Chief of Staff has had numerous contacts with a lot of prominent Nigerians.

Among those who allegedly met with President Buhari since his return to Nigeria on March 14 include President Buhari, Vice President Osinbajo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, Ministers of Health, Dr Osagie Enahire, Minister of Power, Alhaji Saleh Mamman and some of his aides (who travelled to Germany with Malam Kyari), Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Managing Director of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu ( who met Kyari during the meeting of the Presidential Taskforce on Coronavirus) and all members of the Presidential Taskforce.

They include Ministers of Interior, Foreign Affairs, Humanitarian Affairs, Education, Information, State for Health. They also include the Director General of Department of State Security (DSS), World Health Organisation Country Representative and Dr Sani Aliyu, National Coordinator for Coronavirus Control.

The list also include Governor Yahaya Bello (Kyari attended the burial of his mother in Kogi State last weekend), Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomole (who met with Kyari to quash his travails), APC Governors, the Chief of Defence Staff and the Service Chiefs, Inspector General of Police, security details of the above top officials and personnel of the Presidential Villa, Abuja who works closely with the Chief of Staff and those close to them.
