COVID-19: Nigeria’s 339 new cases raise fears of escalating infections as total hit 7,016

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Thursday confirmed 339 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, bringing the total number of infections to 7,016.

The new figures are raising fears that the rate of infections has not yet peaked but that Nigerians should brace up for more bad news before infections plateau in the country, before going down.

The death roll has increased from just two on April 1, 2020 to 211 as at Thursday.

Total confirmed cases moved from 174 to 7,016 while active cases rose withing the corresponding period from 163 to 4,898. However a total of 1,907 patients have been discharged in Nigeria so far.

Daily new infections in Nigeria has also spiked with 195 on April 28 to 339 as at Thursday. The highest daily infection figures were on May 7 and 8 when 381 and 386 were recorded.

According to the breakdown of figures from NCDC, nine new patients died on Thursday, explaining that most of the fatalities recorded from COVID-19 were cases with other underlying illnesses known as co-morbidities.

NCDC also said that the 339 new cases were recorded in 18 States of the federation, namely, Lagos(139), Kano(28), Oyo(28), Edo(25), Katsina(22), Kaduna(18), Jigawa (14), Yobe(13), Plateau (13), FCT(11), Gombe(8), Ogun(5), Bauchi(4), Nasarawa(4), Delta(3), Ondo(2), Rivers(1), Adamawa(1).
