Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala emerges DG, WTO

Global trade body, the World Trade Organisation (WTO), on Wednesday formally chose Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance Minister and international civil servant, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as its Director General.

The highly competitive race came to the wire as Dr Okonjo-Iweala emerged winner in the final vote, polling 104 votes from the 164-member nation body. Her rival and South Korea’s Trade Minister, Yoo Myung Hee.

The Nigerian former Finance Minister becomes the first woman to lead the global trade body and the first African to occupy the office of Director General of WTO.

 Sources said that the announcement of the result of the election would hold by 3pm, Nigerian time.
