Buhari orders immediate reopening of four of Nigeria’s land borders

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday ordered the immediate reopening of four of Nigeria’s land borders.

The four borders to be reopened immediately include Seme and Mfun borders in the Southwest, Ilela and Maigatari borders in the Northwest.

Nigeria had in August 2019 closed its land borders to curtail illegal importation of drugs, small arms and agricultural products into country from neighbouring West African nations.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, had earlier approved the recommendation of the Committee for the reopening of the nation’s four land borders with immediate effect.

Others, the meeting said, would be reopened in due course.

Minister of Finance Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed announced the reopening after the Council’s 28th virtual meeting, which President Muhammadu Buhari participated from Daura, Katsina.

The Minister stated however that the restriction on the importation of some commodities, like rice and other products, would still be in force.
