Nigeria has entered the second wave of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) recorded 758 new infections on Tuesday.
The new infections bring the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria to 74,132, out of the 848,194 tests conducted since the first confirmed case relating to COVID-19 pandemic was announced on February 27 this year.
The NCDC said via its verified website three COVID-19-related deaths was recorded on Tuesday, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,200.
Also, out of the 74,132 confirmed cases, 66,494 have been discharged after treatment from the 36 States of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
To show the upward climb in new infections, the NCDC noted that in its week 50 of monitoring COVID-19 in Nigeria, new cases jumped last week to 3,918, from 1,843 in week 49.
Also, the number of discharged cases decreased to 1,316 in week 50 last week, from 1,726 in week 49.
Also, whereas the number of new infections affected 25 States and the FCT in week 49, it jumped to 31 States and FCT in week 50.
Cumulatively, the NCDC said that since the outbreak of COVID-19 began in Week 9 in Nigeria, there has been Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 1.6 per cent.
Also, the number of reported deaths in the last one week in States and the FCT is 17.
The health agency’s records also show that in week 50, the number of in-bound international travellers at Nigerian airports was 15,805 compared to 11,711 in Week 49.
To showcase that travelers arriving Nigeria are sure areas of new infections, in Week 50, the number of international travellers with a positive result after the 7th day of arrival was 129 compared to 81 in week 49.
The NCDC said that of the new infections, FCT took the lead with 305 while Lagos, Kaduna and Bauchi reported 152, 103 and 44 cases respectively.
Others include Gombe-35, Plateau-31, Rivers-17, Sokoto-15, Kwara-13, Kano-9, Ebonyi-8, Ogun-5, Osun-5, Oyo-4, Edo-4, Anambra-4, Bayelsa-2, Ekiti-1 and Taraba-1.
