U.S. Police Officer Chauvin, killer of George Floyd, transferred to Minnesota correctional facility, awaiting sentencing

Convicted murderer and former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been transferred to the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Oak Park Heights.

Minnesota Department of Corrections Spokesperson Sarah Fitzgerald told CNN that Chauvin arrived at the facility at 4:55 p.m. CT, shortly after he was found guilty of all three charges against him in the death of George Floyd.

Fitzgerald added that a new booking photo of Chauvin would be made available Wednesday.

Chauvin’s transfer to the facility was made as an agreement between the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Department of Corrections, CNN reported.

The facility is located about 25 miles east of downtown Minneapolis.

The jury took about 10 hours to come to its unanimous decision. When the verdict was read, Chauvin was immediately remanded into custody and had his bail revoked.

Chauvin’s sentencing is set to take place in the coming weeks, though a date was not set when the verdict was announced.

Almost immediately after Chauvin’s guilty verdict was announced, people gathered in the streets of Minneapolis to celebrate. A large crowd gathered outside Cup Foods, the convenience store where the fatal encounter between Floyd and Chauvin occurred. A memorial had been set up outside the store, with a painting of Floyd’s face and flowers placed on the street.
