Insecurity: Buhari shifts focus to South East/South South, approve new measures to tackle IPOB/ESN

The meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) ended on Tuesday with President Muhammadu Buhari approving new security measures specifically for the South East and South South geo-political zones of the country.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its wing, Eastern Security Network ((ESN) have been accused of perpetuating the violence, killings, burning of private and public buildings especially Police station in recent weeks.

The meeting decided that it would no longer publicise measures to be deployed to tackle insecurity in the country in order to ensure an effective outcome.

This is the third meeting of the Council President Buhari is presiding over in two weeks.

Under the Third Schedule Part I Federal Executive Bodies (Established by Section 153), Section 26, “The Council shall have power to advise the President on matters relating to public security including matters relating to any organisation or agency established by law for ensuring the security of the Federation.”

National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd) told journalists after the meeting alongside Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor and Acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, said the meeting stressed the need to address the security challenges in the country particularly those that have arisen in the last few months.

He said President Buhari have matching orders forall the nation’s security agencies to deal with the emerging problems physically.
