Chad’s interim President in Nigeria, meets Buhari over insecurity

President of Chad’s Transitional Military Council, General Mahamat Idriss Deby, on Friday made his second foreign trip to its neighbor, Nigeria, meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Derby, who is on a one-day official visit to Nigeria, had earlier visited its other neighbor, the Republic of Niger on May 11.

Deby took over the mantle of leadership in his country after the assassination of his father on the frontlines of the war against insurgents, on April 19, 2021.

Sources said that Deby’s visit is aimed at formally introducing himself to Buhari, who is considered to be one of the most influential leaders in the West African sub-region and Africa at large.

Other matters expected to be discussed at the meeting are the menace of terrorism and arms proliferation threatening the peace and security of the sub-region.

Before his father’s death, Nigeria and Chad had a series of partnerships in the fight against terrorism.
