Nigeria’s Police Council ended its one-day meeting in Abuja on Friday, confirming Usman Alkali Baba as Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The Police Council is composed of the President, Governor of the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), chairman of Police Service Commission and the Inspector General of Police.
The Council is mandated to provide general supervision of the police, to oversee its organisation and administration, and to advise the President on the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police.
Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Maigari Dingyadi, who announced the confirmation of Baba as IGP at the end of the Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, said it unanimous.
The Minister said President Buhari directed him to ensure that the insecurity bedeviling the nation is brought to the barest minimum.
Baba was a Deputy Inspector General of Police before the President appointed him as Acting Inspector General of Police on April 6.
