DHQ explains Defence Intelligence Agency invitation to Commodore Olawunmi over his controversial Channels TV interview

Defence Headquarters on Saturday explained the invitation by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) to the former Deputy Director (Administration), Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (rtd), saying that he was neither arrested nor declared wanted.

While at the DIA on Tuesday, he is expected to meet, among other officers, the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), Major General Samuel Adebayo.

Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), Nigeria’s apex military intelligence agency, had summoned Commodore Olawunmi to report to its headquarters Abuja over his controversial interview on Channels TV where he accused President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration of unwillingness to probe and prosecute high-profile politicians fingered as sponsors of Boko Haram/Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorism in the country.

He also accused the federal government of pursuing an agenda to Islamise Nigeria.

Olawunmi, who is now a Professor of Global Security Studies, worked variously with the DIA as Deputy Defence Adviser (France) and other departments of the agency, apart from the routine deployments to Defence and Naval Headquarters.

Director of Defence Information, Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr, told Global Upfront Newspapers (GUN) that “it was a phone call that was made to him informally by a concerned officer so that he can come and provide valuable information to the CDI that would help the fight against terrorism and insurgency. This do not constitute any form of warrant of arrest.

“The retired senior officer will be welcomed any day at the DIA to contribute his quota toward providing information that will lead to a lasting solution to our security challenges.”
