Nigerians flee to Cameroon as ISWAP launch massive attack on Rann, Northeast Nigeria

Terrorists from the Islamic State in West African Province (ISWAP) on Monday launched a massive attack in Rann, headquarters of Kala Balge Local Government Area of Borno State, Northeast Nigeria.

And because of the intensity of the attack, many residents of the town fled to Cameroon.

Rann is about 350 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital and is adjacent to the border with Cameroon. It is also home to an estimated 30,000 refugees who returned from Cameroon.

The returnees were part of the 40,3861 Nigerian women, men and children who originally fled Rann following deadly terrorists attacks in December 2018 and January 2019.

Sources said that the heavily armed terrorists had stormed the town in the early hours of Monday.

The source noted that the terrorists set many houses on fire but met fierce resistance from the troops of the Nigerian Army who engaged them in a fierce gun battle.

A resident said the insurgents allowed civilians to leave the town unharmed.

Another source said the ISWAP fighters fled the town following a military reinforcement.
