Anambra: INEC declares Anambra Governorship election inconclusive as APGA’s Soludo wins 18 of 20 LGAs

  • Supplementary election holds Tuesday in Ihiala LGA where there was no voting
  • APGA’s Soludo declared winner in ‘controversial’ Orumba North LGA

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) early Monday morning declared the Anambra Governorship Election inconclusive.

This is all a formality as the candidate of the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in the State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has won by comfortable margin in 18 of the State’s 20 LGAs declared by INEC.

Mr Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in one LGA, Ogbaru, while Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of Young Progressive Party (YPP) won in his LGA, Nnewi North. Senator Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) however did not win a single LGA.

Professor Florence Obi, Returning Officer of the election, said at the INEC headquarters office in Awka, Anambra capital, said the election could not end on first ballot because there was no voting in Ihiala Local Government Area ILGA) of the State.

Justifying her action with the Electoral Act, Professor Obi said a supplementary election will hold in Ihiala on Tuesday.

According to her declaration: “I, Prof. Florence Obi, with the power vested on me as the returning officer, hereby suspend the collation and announcement of any result until elections are conducted in 320 polling units in the Ihiala Local Government.”

“The supplementary election will take place on Tuesday 9th November.”

In announcing the results so far, Professor Obi said that Professor Soludo of APGA secured the highest votes in Saturday’s election with a total of 103,946 votes, followed by Mr Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who had 51,322 votes while Senator Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came a distant third with 42,942 votes.

There were a total of 246,638 registered voters and 241,090 accredited voters in the election.

The total valid votes stood at 229,521 while rejected votes were 7,841.

A total of 237,362 votes were cast in the election.

Meanwhile, Professor Soludo secured his 18th LGA win by having in his kitty the controversial Orumba North LGA whose collation had earlier been put on hold as a result of inconsistencies as the returning officer said he was forced to sign a result which did not reflect happenings at the LGA.

Following his complaint, a stakeholders’ meeting was held after which the result of the LGA was announced.

In the results announced, Soludo polled a total of 4,787 votes ahead of Senator Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 2,672 votes and Mr Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came a distant third with 1,847 votes.

All eyes are now on Ihiala LGA where supplementary elections have been called for Tuesday, November 9.
