Pirates attack Danish container vessel in Gulf of Guinea waters, take 6 hostages into Niger Delta region area

Sea Pirates took Six crew members hostage during an attack on a Greek-operated container ship in international waters around the Gulf of Guinea, a spokesperson for the Danish Military reported on Tuesday.

On Monday, A Danish frigate operating in the troubled waters, amid unabating security risks from pirates, allegedly sent a helicopter to rescue the under-attack container ship, near Bioko Island, off the coast of Equatorial Guinea.

The Danish helicopter reportedly followed the tiny ship (skiff) with the Six hostages on board as it sailed towards the Niger Delta Area.

It could no longer proceed as the pirates ferried the hostages into Nigerian waters, where the helicopter lacks operational jurisdiction.

The container ship, Tonsberg, operated by a Greece-based commercial company was sailing under a Liberian flag, at the time of the attack.

The frigate Esbern Snare was deployed to the Gulf of Guinea in October to stem the tide of piracy and other crimes in the area.

Last month, Eons intelligence reported the frigate crew foiled a pirate attack, shot and killed four pirates on the Nigeria waters stretch off the Gulf of Guinea.

This last attack was traced to Ten Nautical Miles North West of Bata, Equitorial Guinea. Nothing had been heard of the crew members or their abductors since.

Investigations are ongoing.
