Nigeria’s Record Breaker Tobi Amusan Breaks Record Again, Wins Gold at Commonwealth Games

Nigerian-born Tobi Amusan who recently set a new world record in 100 metres World Athletics Championship hurdles, has broken another record while winning gold at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Amusan returned a time of 12.30 seconds, setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the process.

With this, the 25-year-old Nigerian becomes the first Nigerian world champion to win gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Devynne Charlton from the Bahamas came second in a time of 12.58 seconds, while Cindy Sember of England finished third in a time of 12.59 seconds.

Tobi had smashed the world record at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, United States of America, where she returned in a time of 12.12 seconds during one of the semi-final races.

The Ijebu Ode-born athlete’s performance shattered America’s Kendra Harrison’s record of 12.20 seconds set in July, 2016.

By winning the event once again at the Commonwealth Games, Amusan showed that the performance in Oregon was not a fluke.

Nigeria has now won 31 medals in total at the games, 10 of which are gold.

The country is one gold medal away from equalling the 11 gold medal-record set in 1994.

Ese Brume, who won silver at the World Athletics Championship, is still expected to compete later today in the women’s long jump final.
