Terrorism: Man Jailed 9 Years Files Contempt Charges Against Army, Others

A man who has been held for nine years for terrorism has filed contempt charges against the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and four others over their failure to release him.

Suleiman Hussein Liman also filed for the enforcement of his fundamental rights against the Nigerian Army, the Chief of Army Staff, the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu on March 3 held that the officers listed in the matter ought to have released Liman from custody “to enjoy his constitutional right to liberty by the respondents having served his prison term in charge no: FHC/AINJI/CR/178/2018 between the Federal Republic of Nigeria vs Suleiman Hussein Liman (748) as pronounced by Honourable Justice B.F.M. Nyako.”

The court held that the army’s reply that he was being held for some rehabilitation was not recognised by law.

Due to the non-compliance to the order, counsel to Liman, Hameed Ajibola Jimoh Esq filed the Form 48 contempt proceedings on March 21 against the officials.

Liman was in 2014 jailed for seven years over links with Boko Haram. He completed the term in 2021 but was not released despite court orders.
