The Nigerian Navy has named its newly-commissioned Nigerian Naval War College quarters, Calabar, Cross River State after Rear Admiral Ekpenyong Okpo.

Admiral Okpo, who hails from Cross River State, was a one-time Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command “whose penchant for capacity development is outstanding.”

The formal commissioning of the newly built quarters located at Summit Hills, Calabar, was performed personally by Admiral Okpo as a mark of honour for the celebrated retired very senior officer.

Commandant of Naval War College, Rear Admiral Saheed Adesina Akinwande, who spoke at the commissioning ceremony, explained that naming institutional structures after very senior officers is a way of appreciating the tremendous contributions and support of such distinguished personalities.

Admiral Saheed said Admiral Okpo was someone who guided most officers that passed through his tutelage, amongst other outstanding qualities.

According to him: “We are gathered here in recognition of the indelible contributions of our Special Guest of Honour and a one-time Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, whose penchant for capacity development is outstanding.

“Acknowledging your selfless commitment, which guided most officers that passed through your tutelage, amongst other outstanding qualities, is the reason this accommodation is named R Adm EI Okpo (rtd) accommodation after your humble self, we are really appreciative of your constant guidance, support, and encouragements.

“Thank you, Sir. On this note, I want to again appreciate our special guest of honour for honoring our invitation. To all distinguished guests, we are aware of the sacrifice you have made to grace this occasion.
