Tinubu Writes Senate, Seeks Confirmation Of CDS, Service Chiefs

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm the appointment of new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Service Chiefs.

The request is contained in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during Tuesday’s plenary.

Tinubu said the confirmation request was in line with the Act establishing the Armed Forces.

President Tinubu had on June 19, 2023 appointed by President Tinubu, including Chief of Defence Staff (Major General Christopher Gwabin Musa), Chief of Army Staff (Major General Taoreed A Lagbaja), Chief of Naval Staff (Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla ) and Chief of the Air Staff (Air Vice Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar).

According to the letter, the request is in compliance with the provisions of Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act. Cap A20 Laws the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The president however asked the House to act expeditiously on the request, considering the level of insecurity in the country.

Tinubu had appointed the service chiefs when both Chambers of the National Assembly were on recess.

Akpabio, after reading the letter, referred the request to the Committee of the Whole in absence of Standing Committee on Armed Forces.
