Ukraine-Russia War: Putin Says U.S.-made Patriot Missile Used To Shoot Down Russia’s Il-76 Military Plane

  • The Ukrainian armed forces shot down an Il-76 military cargo aircraft over Russia’s borderline Belgorod Region on January 24

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Ukraine of using missiles fired from a US Patriot air defence system to shoot down an Il-76 plane.

Last week a military transport aircraft crashed in a fireball in the Belgorod region of Russia, which Moscow claimed killed 74 people on board including 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war.

Mr Putin also said Russia wanted an international investigation into the incident – a call Ukraine has already made.

But Ukraine accused the Kremlin of not allowing emergency workers to access the crash site, who may have gathered information that would be necessary for such an investigation.

Ukraine has neither confirmed nor denied that it downed the plane, and has demanded proof of who was on board.
