Again, NLC Slams Soludo Over Anti-Worker Policies, Misinformation, Advises Him to Avoid ‘Gutter’ Politics

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State to address ongoing grievances from workers and steer clear of divisive politics.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in an interview with AIT and a letter to the State government, criticized Soludo’s administration for its alleged anti-worker policies and the dissemination of falsehoods.

Ajaero expressed dissatisfaction with a May 17, 2024, Press Statement from the Anambra State Government, accusing it of spreading misinformation and attempting to divert attention from the legitimate concerns of state workers.

He urged the government to address the issues highlighted by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), which include the failure to pay the 2019 National Minimum Wage of N30,000, unresolved Contributory Pension deductions, and the cessation of a N12,000 special palliative allowance.

Governor Soludo, through his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, defended his administration’s record, claiming significant improvements in worker welfare and working conditions.

However, Ajaero countered these claims, stating that the NLC remains committed to constructive engagement and dialogue to resolve these issues.

Ajaero highlighted the NLC’s disappointment with Soludo’s alleged encouragement to other state governors to reject the proposed N70,000 minimum wage. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, noting that the state government’s actions contradict its claims of progress.

The NLC has issued a one-week ultimatum and strike notice, urging the state government to comply with national labor laws and address the unresolved issues. Ajaero stressed that the NLC’s statements were not intended to disparage Soludo but to bring attention to the pressing concerns of Anambra workers.

In a statement on Sunday, Ajaero called for greater respect and dignity for workers, urging the state government to engage in meaningful dialogue rather than resorting to misinformation and political deflection. He emphasized that the NLC’s focus remains on the welfare of workers and the adherence to lawful labor practices.

The NLC continues to advocate for transparency and constructive engagement, urging the Anambra State Government to address worker grievances sincerely and promptly.
