Rumour: Former President Jimmy Carter Has Not Died, Carter Centre Confirms

  • A false letter claiming the former President’s death is circulating on social media

A widely-circulated letter claiming former President Jimmy Carter has died is a hoax, the Carter Center told Atlanta News First on Tuesday.

Spreading on social media platforms like X, the false letter has been seen by hundreds of thousands of people. It includes typos and a satirical quote.

The Carter Center declined to comment further on the situation.

Carter, 99, remains in hospice care in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. He would turn 100 on Oct. 1, 2024.

Rosalynn Carter, the former president’s wife of 77 years, died on Nov. 19 at 96 last year. Carter was seen attending her tribute service in Atlanta at Emory University’s Glenn Memorial Church.

In June, Carter’s grandson Jason Carter said his grandfather’s condition hasn’t significantly changed since he entered hospice care more than a year ago.

“After 77 years of marriage… I just think none of us really understand what it’s like for him right now,” Jason told Southern Living. “We have to embrace that fact, that there’s things about the spirit that you just can’t understand.”
