UK: Man ‘Slashed’ 2-year-old Toddler’s Throat And Girl’s Face In East London, Court Hears

By Grâçia Ada Obi

A man allegedly “slashed” the throat of a two-year-old boy and the face of an eight-year-old girl before attacking a woman who tried to protect them, a court heard on Monday 28, 2024.

Kulvinder Ram, 48, is said to have attacked the two young children with a knife before turning on the woman, who had stepped in to try and stop him.

The defendant is charged with three counts of attempted murder relating to the incident, which is alleged to have occurred last Friday in Dagenham, East London, United Kingdom (UK).

Ram, from Dagenham, appeared in court dressed in a grey prison tracksuit.

He hung his head in the dock and stared at the floor during the short hearing at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court, while a woman translated what was said in court into Punjabi for him.

Family members of the alleged victims also attended court.

Ram’s case was sent to the Old Bailey, where he will appear next month.

Prosecutor J Ambrose told the court Ram had attacked the children and the woman, said by police to be in her 30s, with a knife.

Ms Ambrose said: “There are three complainants in this matter. The defendant attacked all three complainants with a knife, including slashing the throat of [the two-year-old boy], front and back.

“In relation to [the eight-year-old girl], he has cut the corner of her mouth to the corner of her ear.

“[The woman] also sustained injuries when she tried to protect the children. The Crown opposes bail.”

District Judge J Moffatt sent Ram’s case to the Central Criminal Court, where he will appear on Nov 11.

“Mr Ram, as I have said, these cases are too serious for this court to deal with,” Judge Moffatt said.

“For the time being, I am sending your case to the Old Bailey.

“You will be produced there on Nov 11 for the plea and trial preparation hearing. Until then, I am going to remand you in custody.”
