Anambra: No To Toxic Business Environment
By Valentine Chineto Ozigbo
What did Governor Charles Soludo do with N487 billion in the last 30 months? For the past two and half years, Governor Soludo has been at the helm of Anambra State, renowned as a financial expert and international development economist.
He came into office with promises of transforming the State to rival global hubs like Dubai and Taiwan where once rocky landscapes have been turned into economic powerhouses admired worldwide. During his tenure, Governor Soludo has received substantial sums and these are coming from three major sources.
Number one is the FAAC (Federal Allocation Account) where over N243 billion has been received; IGR (Internally Generated Revenue) where over N82 billion has been received and of course the Local Government allocations where over N162 billion has been received; a total of over N487 billion excluding other potential revenues from long term government investments.
Personnel for the 30 months is estimated to cost about N53 billion, leaving the government with over N434 billion, assuming there were no surpluses from his predecessor, Governor Willie Obiano. Therefore, by all accounts, Governor Soludo should have considerable financial resources at his disposal, akin to the proverbial “Izuogu and his charm…”
Governor Soludo has openly criticized former Governor Peter Obi’s approach of saving money and making long term investments, suggesting he is fully utilizing all available funds for development projects. Despite these significant financial inflows, there is little visible evidence across the entire Anambra State where these billions have been deployed.
Let’s talk about roads. While some roads have been constructed and the flyover in Ekwulobia under construction, realistic estimates suggest not more than N50 billion, at most N80 billion has been deployed on these projects by “Soludo and Company.”
From the Chinua Achebe airport which is falling into a state of disrepair due to lack of government support, to Nnewi, a hub that should be known for industrialization which lacks meaningful infrastructural development, to Onitsha which should actually be the Centre of Excellence when it comes to trade and commerce, but nothing near that, and the State capital Awka which should be the best capital in South East but of course is a glorified village today because of lack of attention, nothing notable happening.
The question here is: Apart from what Governor Obi and Governor Obiano did, What Has Governor Soludo Done in these important cities and Local Governments? Ndi Anambra, I want you to follow me on this journey. Let’s actually probe into where these funds have gone to. People hear things like road construction, security and agriculture. Let’s talk a little bit about them.
Despite the substantial personnel costs, the total expenditure over the past 30 months equates approximately N21 billion per Local Government. I want to ask, in each of these 21 Local Governments that we have, where can you reasonably see evidence of N1 billion? Is it Ogbaru or Nnewi, Ihiala, Idemili North, or any other?
Let’s talk about the roads. The roads being constructed in Onitsha for instance by “Soludo and Sons,” are they genuinely worth anywhere close to N10 billion so far? Yes, some roads have been built. But it is even surprising that our esteemed Professor of Finance has chosen to focus on visible road construction, a route that many in executive positions used to secure kickbacks amassing financial reserves in the process.
Moreover, and this is very painful, none of these projects seem to have undergone any significant impact assessment leading to serious negative consequences that these “Soludo and Sons Company” have failed to address. There is lack of thorough environmental impact studies prior to the commencement of the projects is glaring.
Let me give you a case in point. There is erratic roadworks going on in his village Umueze Isuofia. What has happened there is that flood waters have been redirected into Ezinifite, Igboukwu, Ikenga and other neighbouring communities. A visit to parts of Ezihu, Ezigbo and Umudege villages in Igboukwu, a very prominent town in Aguata Local Government Area will show you first hand evidence of the unfornunate situation I am talking about.
Similar tales abound in many parts of Anambra State. Governor Soludo may cite susstantial overhead costs but such expenses can be significantly reduced as demonstrated by Governor Peter Obi. In fact, it is our Governor that was quoted as even opposing the minimum wage when we have these amounts of surpluses that can help to actually move the civil service to another level.
What we see in Anambra State is even worse when it comes to insecurity. Security costs might also be mentioned as a reason for the spending but the reality on the ground speaks differently. Anambra remains one of the most insecure States in the country if not in all of Southern Nigeria. The State has reportedly paid the highest ransoms and there is no visible technological infrastructure in place. There is nothing to show. Instead, citizens have been forced to self-help. For instance, look at the wonderful effort of Ifeanyi Ubah of blessed memory undertook in parts of Nnewi.
Governor Soludo might also point to the distribution of coconut seedlings and palm fruits to political allies as reasons, as a justification for the spending. It is also disheartening that despite distributing millions of SOLUTION palms and coconut trees, not even up to a thousand appear to have survived. This represents tremendous waste of resources.
Governor Soludo should have benefitted from basic lessons in agriculture revolution from what Governor of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah is doing, where he has executed similar initiatives in a more professional manner, yielding long-term impacts. In all these, the real question here is: When are we going to see the promised transformation of our dear State in the East of Niger into a ‘Dubai’ or ‘Taiwan,’ or at least, let’s even have the equivalent of Aba in Abia State?
Meanwhile, our beloved Anambra has always been a hub for trade and commerce. And when such a resilient and industrious people as Ndi Anambra are put under the leadership of a world-renowned economist, a phenomenal transformation of the State’s entrepreneurial landscape is largely expected.
However, 30 months into the administration of Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo as Governor of Anambra State, the regrettable gap between expectations and reality has become increasingly apparent.
Yet, the State’s potential for economic dominance in trade and commerce is undeniable as it boasts of such high pedestal basic assets like the sprawling Onitsha Main Market, the Nnewi thriving auto parts industry, the Awka growing tech scene and others. Yet, these potentials remain largely untapped.
Small businesses, the lifeblood of Anambra’s economy, are struggling under the weight of inadequate infrastructure and unfavorable stifling policies. Larger enterprises, which should be the driving force for growth and employment, are grappling with similar challenges, leading to reduced productivity and, in some cases, closures.
There are looming questions over the administration’s approach to tax collection and fund utilization. While increased internally generated revenue (IGR) was promised to fuel development projects, the visible impact of these funds is questionable.
Critical infrastructural projects necessary for economic growth – such as industrial parks, market modernization, and improved transportation networks – have witnessed slow progress, where it is not absent. This situation is aggravating the high unemployment rate and increased hardship faced by the average Anambra man and woman.
But the most cancerous challenge to the growth of Anambra economy remains insecurity. This major impediment to the movement of business people and goods across the State has become a leading source of capital flight as it is slowing down investments and the natural Think Home philosophy of Ndi Anambra.
This makes it imperative for the Governor to work assiduously with the federal government and stakeholders to create the peace and security necessary for the State to take its pride of place as the major beneficiary of private capital inflow in Nigeria.
The Governor should therefore strengthen security measures across the State particularly in rural areas in order to enhance the safety of businesses, business owners, and traders who used to throng the State in search of better deals in goods. There is no gainsaying that Anambra needs the enabling environment of peace, security and stability for trade and commerce to prosper.
So, as we assess Governor Soludo’s tenure thus far, it’s clear that urgent action is needed. The administration must reevaluate its economic strategies, prioritizing infrastructure development and creating a more security-enhanced business-friendly environment.
There must also be transparency in the use of State funds while clear and closer collaboration with the private sector, which is imperative, should be pursued. Anambra’s potential for economic greatness remains vast, but realizing it requires decisive leadership and a return to the innovative spirit that has long defined Ndi Anambra. And this requires jettisoning the prevailing toxic business environment and enthroning world-class tested standards.

Let’s join hands to hold our Governor accountable. God bless you all.
Ozigbo, former President of Transcorp Plc, is Labour Party chieftain and frontline Governorship hopeful in Anambra State
Anambra: Mocking democracy with LG elections –Valentine Chineto Ozigbo
The recent Local Government elections in Anambra State has once again cast a long shadow over the integrity of our democratic process. As the leading opposition candidate in next year’s Governorship election under the Labour Party (LP), I feel compelled to address the serious concerns raised by this sham election conducted on September 28, 2024, and call on our fellow citizens to reflect and act.
At the heart of our concern lies the hasty amendment of the Anambra Electoral Act which was rushed through the State House of Assembly by Governor Charles Soludo’s administration with such an alarming speed. First, on May 30, 2024, the Anambra State House of Assembly has passed the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) bill into law. Then, on August 14, amendments to the ASIEC law passed through the first, second and third readings, the same day, with virtually no opposition. The House, seemingly under pressure, effected the amendments with minimal public scrutiny or debate, thereby raising troubling questions about the intent behind them, which potentially undermined fair elections. The amendments put a question mark on the motive behind the urgency to the amendment. And who truly benefitted from it, the people of Anambra State or tailored for the party in power?
This became clearer on the said Election Day when the conduct was marred by reports of significant irregularities from participating party members, independent observers, and concerned citizens. Disturbing instances of voter intimidation have come to light, including a particularly troubling incident in Nnewi, where teargas was allegedly used against a physically challenged candidate. Many have described the election as a mere formality, with results apparently predetermined. That such a flawed process could occur under the watch of an administration led by a Professor is both ironic and deeply disappointing. These irregularities strike at the very heart of our democratic principles and cannot be ignored or dismissed.
The implications of these flawed elections for governance at our third tier of government – Local Government level- are far-reaching and profoundly concerning. Elected officials emerging from this tainted process may face significant legitimacy challenges, given the widespread perception of an unfair electoral system. There are justified concerns about the accountability of officials who did not genuinely earn their mandates through a free and fair electoral process. Perhaps most alarmingly, public trust in our Local Government institutions and the democratic process itself is at risk of further erosion. We must recognize that the damage done extends far beyond this single election cycle and threatens the very foundation of our local democratic governance.
It is also crucial to view these elections within the broader context of Governor Soludo’s tenure. His grand promises of transforming Anambra into African Dubai Taiwan (ADT) Development Concept remains unfulfilled, serving as a stark reminder of the gap between rhetoric and reality. Our State’s economy continues to struggle, with many citizens facing increasing economic hardship. Persistent security concerns have left many of our brothers and sisters afraid to return to their homes, leaving the homelands virtually abandoned. Against this backdrop, the flawed conduct of Local Elections appears not as an isolated incident but as part of a broader pattern of governance that falls short of the needs and expectations of Anambra citizens.
Despite the deeply troubling nature of these elections, we must not disengage from the democratic process. Instead, we must chart a path forward that reinforces our commitment to genuine democracy. We will pursue legal challenges to contest the questionable aspects of the electoral process, seeking to hold those responsible accountable and to establish precedents that will safeguard future elections. We call upon capable and compassionate candidates to continue engaging in local politics despite the challenges they face.
Your participation is vital to the long-term health of our democracy. We commit to maintaining pressure on the State government through legitimate democratic means and public discourse, ensuring that the voices of all Anambra citizens are heard. Furthermore, we will tirelessly advocate for genuine electoral reforms to ensure transparency, fairness, and credibility in future elections.
To the youth and grassroots candidates who participated in this flawed process: Your courage and commitment to our democracy are commendable. Your efforts are not in vain but rather pave the way for a better future. You represent the hope and resilience of Anambra. And we stand with you in the ongoing struggle for true democratic representation.
Governor Soludo may believe he has outmanoeuvred the opposition. But in doing so, he has underestimated the will and wisdom of the Anambra people. We remain vigilant and committed to the cause of true democracy in our State. This is not merely a political contest. it is a fight for the soul of our democracy and the future of our State.
I therefore urge all citizens of Anambra to stay engaged, to demand accountability, and to work tirelessly towards building a more robust and genuinely transparent democratic system of governance at the State and Local Government levels. The path ahead may be challenging, but together, we possess the strength, resilience, and determination to create the Anambra we deserve.
Our collective voice and actions have the power to shape a future where elections genuinely reflect the will of the people and where our Local Governments serve the interests of all citizens. The journey towards this vision begins now, with each of us committing to remain active, informed, and unwavering in our pursuit of actual democratic governance.
64th Independence Day Anniversary – Let Beacon Of Hope Thrive
Today, October 1st, 2024 marks the 64th anniversary of our independence as a nation. Being a significant day in our national history, it must therefore not be mere turn of a calendar page but a day that resonates with the promise of our future, particularly when we reflect on the sacrifices of our founding fathers who laid the foundation upon which we are today.
With the current state of our economy and political environment, it is easy for many Nigerians to become disheartened because of the lack of proper vision and display of unpatriotic leadership at different levels of Nigeria’s governance structure. Indeed, as we mark and celebrate the 64 years of nationhood, we are at a crossroad of reflection and renewal, backed with the hope that things will get better someday.
Therefore, this commemoration of our independence should not only serve as a reminder of our challenges but also as a beacon of hope and a call to action. Nigerians must learn and embrace the act of taking our destiny in our hands.
In this vein, Nigerian Youths must lead and come to terms with the reality that the power to reclaim and reshape our nation lie in their hands. They must take up this task of liberating our country from the shackles of poor leadership. They cannot leave it for any other segment of the society.
We all know that it is not going to be an easy task, but let us draw our strength from the unwavering resolve of our forefathers who fought tirelessly for the sovereignty we now enjoy. We must take our citizenship responsibilities as a clarion call by engaging and participating actively in democratic processes, holding ourselves and our leaders accountable. Our voices, our votes, and our actions are the tools with which we can restore the Nigeria of our dreams, envisioned by our forefathers.
Therefore, for every Nigerian, whether you live in our homeland or in Diaspora, this is not a time to sit on the fence. We must all get involved always and in all ways. Together, let’s get our country working by building strong institutions as against strong individuals as this will see us march forward into a future bright and full of promise.
As we celebrate the 64th anniversary of our togetherness as a nation, I wish above all things that Nigeria of our dreams, where unity, peace, progress and prosperity are entrenched, becomes a reality in no time.
As we mark and celebrate today, may it remind us of our shared heritage and our common destiny, even as we continue to grow in strength and unity, overcoming our challenges and realizing our vast potentials as a nation where no man is oppressed.

Anambra: No To Toxic Business Environment
In this edition of the #WakeUpSeries, I will discuss the current state of the economy in Anambra State.

I join millions of Labour Party (LP) members and supporters in congratulating the 29-member Caretaker Committee constituted by the National Executive Committee (NEC)/Extended Stakeholders meeting held in Umuahia, Abia State Capital. Led by distinguished Senators Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwaokocha as Chairman and Secretary respectively, they offer new hope and beginnings for our great party.
I also congratulate our leadership led by the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, and other critical stakeholders led by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State for this bold step.
This is moreso as the Caretaker Committee is mandated to immediately ensure that the Ward, Local Government, State, and National Congresses and conventions of the Labour Party are held as soon as possible in accordance with the constitution of the Labour Party.
I believe that this is a golden opportunity to reposition the party into a popular movement that would attract new membership and enthrone a strong and disciplined party leadership that will lead in galvanizing Nigerians from the Ward, Local Government, State and national levels.
I also enjoin all members to cooperate with the Caretaker Committee and the other members representing various interests including the NLC, TUC, Senate, House of Representatives, House of Assembly and gubernatorial candidates in the last election to ensure the success of the new direction and assignment.
The Labour Party emerging from this should serve as the rallying point for restoration of the vanishing hope and confidence to long-suffering Nigerians and be the answer to their yearning for enthronement of democratic and good governance ideals, from the Ward, Local Government, State, and the national level.
Anambra LG Election Programmed To Be Rigged, Says “We Can’t Even Visit Home…Those At Home Live in Constant Fear” – Ozigbo
Labour Party chieftain and frontline Governorship hopeful in Anambra State, Valentine Ozigbo, on Sunday raised alarm that Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo orchestrated the House of Assembly amendment of the Anambra Electoral Act in order to “facilitate his planned rigging and impose his loyalists on Ndi Anambra in his flawed re-election bid.”
Stating that Governor Soludo “does not deserve another chance,” Ozigbo said that the because of the raging insecurity in the State, “we can’t even visit home, and those who are at home live in constant fear!”
Ozigbo, a former President of Transcorp Plc, noted in his statement titled ‘My position on Anambra LGA Elections’ that boycotting the Local Government election, the Labour Party should field candidates that will show that “Ndi Anambra are weary of waiting for the promised Dubai and Taiwan” he promised the people of the State during the Governorship election of November 2022.
According to the statement: “In his characteristic manner of positioning himself as “the wisest in the room,” Governor Soludo hastily orchestrated and pressured the State House of Assembly into amending the Anambra Electoral Act. This move is designed to facilitate his planned rigging and impose his loyalists on Ndi Anambra in his flawed re-election bid.
“While this illegal act is bound to be fruitless, we must not fall into the trap of boycotting the so-called election. Instead, we will seize every opportunity to show him that Ndi Anambra are weary of waiting for the promised Dubai and Taiwan. Worse still, we can’t even visit home, and those who are at home live in constant fear! The entire economy of Ndi Anambra has been crippled, leaving our people to struggle in poverty.
“I have suggested to the leadership of our party and some of our elected members that we should present candidates to our people who possess the capacity, character, and compassion to bring about positive and impactful change at the grassroots level. This is without prejudice to the need to challenge some obnoxious provisions of the amended act that contradict national laws and common sense.
“The Governor does not deserve another chance, and we will continue to counter his nefarious schemes at every turn.”
Insecurity: Anambra Is Bleeding, Stop The Lethargy – Valentine Ozigbo Tells Soludo
Saturday, July 13, 2024, Anambra State witnessed unprecedented surge of kidnappings and associated insecurity. From Ifite Awka, along Agulu-Adazi-Oraukwu road, Nimo, along Ichida-Neni-Igboukwu axis, Afor Nkpor roads, and around Nnobi-Nnewi road, there were successful kidnappings and rumours of kidnappings.
This caused a wave of exit by Ndi Anambra who came for burials, weddings and other personal, family or community events. Indeed, Anambra is “No Longer At Ease,” to reecho the title of Chinua Achebe iconic book.
Clearly, the security architecture in our dear Anambra has collapsed. There is no more pretense. The government of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has ran out of Solutions and there are no more excuses to give. In any case, Ndi Anambra are not in the mood for any.
They are tired of name callings any time attention is drawn to the spate of insecurity by stakeholders. The last time I called on the State government to act on the lingering insecurity, they dismissed it as non-existent. The Governor’s Press Secretary said it is normal because it happens everywhere else. He added that not much can be done until the issue of State Police is resolved in favour of the federating units.
But the current situation does not require the Governor shielding himself and his government from reality. Insecurity cannot be denied as Saturday’s kidnappings across the State showed.
I again call on the Governor to swallow his words and do the needful. Security in Anambra is broken and it is time to fix it. It has crippled business, social, cultural activities. Ndi Anambra have refused to accept any reason for failure and are no more willing to take rhetoric as substitute to action.
After all, part of the reasons they elected the Governor is to work for their security and welfare. This was aptly captured by Section 14(2) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 which states that security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government. Let this purpose of enthroning the Soludo government be fulfilled. This is the time for SOLUTION. Ndi Anambra are not asking for too much. They want the lethargy to stop and action taken to secure our dear State.
Insecurity: SBM’s Damning Report on Anambra, The Ultimate Disgrace
The cries of Ndi Anambra over the unacceptable security situation in the State have always been flippantly dismissed by minions of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo as rantings of ‘disgruntled’ opposition. This is despite the fact that incidences of kidnappings, killings, robberies are daily occurrences across the state.
Now, the lamentations of Ndi Anambra have been vindicated by a most damning report by SBM Intelligence which rated Anambra as the headquarters of kidnapping-for-ransom in Nigeria.
SBM Intelligence is Africa-focused market/security intelligence gathering consulting firm and acclaimed Nigeria’s leading geopolitical research consultancy outfit, which is “particularly strong in the area of primary data gathering, and analyses of data that provides clarity relating to political, economic and social issues in Nigeria and West Africa.”
The report from its website released on Thursday by the firm covering July 2023 to July 2024, which ranked Anambra as the headquarters of kidnapping-for-ransom, stated that around N350 million was paid by victims to kidnappers, while many were killed even after paying ransom. Anambra’s rating was far ahead of the second placed Rivers State that recorded N67 million in ransom payment by victims.
This is certainly a most unwanted record by a state which a few years ago under former Governor Peter Obi successfully tackled kidnappings. It showed a government that cared for its citizenry and which recognized that securing life and property was its number one duty.
Today, virtually all classes of people in the state are targeted by kidnappers and other gunmen and our Governor, Soludo, carries on his business as usual approach. This shouldn’t be. It is as if everything is all right especially in terms of security while he moves with bullet proof vehicles and heavily armed troops, inured from the pains of our people.
Just on Thursday, gunmen attacked and destroyed Ogbaru Local Government headquarters and went away unscathed. And neither the Governor nor his government showed empathy as Ndi Anambra face great peril. At least, since this year, there has been no word of sympathy or visit to victims and their families.
I believe that this is the time to step in and secure Anambra. There should be no uncaring or disinterested attitude as people, including the Governor, are now condemned to holding important events outside the state. Perhaps, the SBM Intelligence report will finally sound a wakeup call on the Governor.
I call on him to hearken to the cries of our people and do his part in leading the charge to save the state from the grip of gunmen and other criminals. I also call on all stakeholders to join in mounting pressure on the Governor to do the right thing and return Anambra back to the leading most peaceful state in Nigeria. It is not too much to ask.
COPDEM and Other Obidients, Embodiment of Active Citizenship
I am deeply moved by the unwavering commitment and tireless efforts of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), the Big Six (Peter Obi Support Network, Women for Peter Obi, Nigeria Needs Peter Obi, Like Minds for Peter Obi, Take Back Naija and UpNorth Ambassadors) and many other Support Groups. As a staunch advocate for active citizenship, I’ve watched with admiration as COPDEM members and these various groups work diligently to uphold the pillars of our democracy.
Your dedication to fostering a more engaged and informed citizenry is truly commendable. You each embody the spirit of active citizenship that is so crucial for the growth and development of our great nation. You remind us all that democracy is not a spectator sport, but a collective responsibility that requires our constant participation and vigilance.
I am humbled and honoured by your recognition of me as a capable and trusted leader. Your faith in my abilities is a responsibility I do not take lightly. I assure you all that I will strive to tirelessly live up to the confidence you have reposed in me. Together, we will work towards creating a more transparent, accountable, and inclusive governance structure that truly serves the people.
I specially commend Ifeanyi Nrialike for his recent interview on AriseTV. Indeed, Ifeanyi, your articulate presentation and the way you laid down facts with clarity and conviction was truly impressive. You’ve shown that when armed with knowledge and passion, we can effectively communicate our vision for a better Nigeria to a wider audience.
To everyone reading this: I encourage you to get involved in governance. Engage in active citizenship. Your voice matters, your actions count. Whether it’s joining the various Support groups, participating in community meetings, or simply staying informed about local and national issues – every step towards engagement is a step towards a better Anambra State and a stronger Nigeria.
Remember, the power to shape our future lies in our hands. Let’s work together to build the Anambra and Nigeria of our dreams. The time for active citizenship is now. Join us in this crucial journey towards a more democratic, prosperous, and united nation.
Anambra 2025: How Ifeanyi Ubah’s Death Disrupts Equation in Labour Party, APC, APGA
Next year’s gubernatorial election in Anambra State is attracting all the interests, for obvious reasons. After all, it is the home State of Labour Party’s 2023 Presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi. The State is currently governed by the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), which is not among the three top parties with a national outlook.
With Labour Party’s electoral performance in 2023 in the State, many political pundits believe APGA is sitting on a borrowed chair.
Incumbent Governor of the State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, on his first term in office, is also desiring and gearing to have a second term. Anambra State is also unique with four political parties in hot chase for the Agu-Awka home of government in the State. In addition to APGA, there are the All Progressives Congress (APC), the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the raving Labour Party.
Preparations for the election in all the parties have been heightening with the accompanying intrigues.
The ruling APGA in the State is undergoing a major crisis that is visibly threatening the second term of its flag bearer in the State, Governor Soludo. The change in national leadership of the party via the Court has put Governor Soludo in a precarious situation.
The PDP in the State has long been decimated by the electoral hurricane of the Labour Party. Ditto the APC whose case worsened with the sudden demise of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah who was being projected to fly the party’s gubernatorial flag next year. The Labour Party, whose electoral strength in the State is not in doubt ahead of the governorship race, is also not enjoying the needed harmony.
One had expected that the passing on of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah wouldn’t have been much of an issue given the fact that his APC was not a serious contender to the throne. But feelers from the State are showing that his exit has disrupted a lot of equations in the other parties.
While Senator Ubah was copiously an APC man, credible underhand information shows that he was also doing political business with the Labour Party which would have seen him pick up the Labour Party ticket instead of the APC.
No Labour Party person will confirm this now that he is late but a credible source confirmed that he facilitated the Labour Party’s controversial National Convention in Nnewi Anambra State. It is believed that Senator Ubah provided both accommodation, security and political cover for the questionable National Convention.
Even the Labour Party Congresses held in Anambra State recently were designed to build the structure for him as it was hijacked by some top elected and party functionaries towards a designated outcome. The front-runner gubernatorial aspirant for the Labour Party, Valentine Ozigbo, was schemed out as the LP’s former National Organizing Secretary (NOS) now the Deputy National Chairman, Clement Ojukwu, an Nnewi native, was the party’s link with Senator Ubah who made sure Ozigbo was thrown under the bus. In fact, they already had a tailor-made LP Governorship aspirant who would have been a place-holder for the late Senator.
The sudden death of Senator Ubah has therefore opened further intrigues as the group bent on stopping the front-runner Ozigbo in the Labour Party is currently in search of another candidate.
A newcomer to the party, George Muoghalu, also from Nnewi, the same as Senator Ubah, is being seriously considered but they have the uphill battle of upstaging Ozigbo who controls the core of Obidient supporters in the State.
This group in the Labour Party is also toying with getting a Senatorial candidate for the vacant Senatorial seat left by Senator Ubah from outside Nnewi to open the way for Muoghalu as Nnewi cannot produce Senate and Governorship candidates at the same time in the zone within the party.
Some Obidient supporters are still surprised at some close aides of Peter Obi who continue to undermine the frontrunner Ozigbo who has done much to keep the group in the State. Some Obidient members in the State fear that this intrigue might affect the performance of the party in 2025 as frustrating Ozigbo will create division in the party.
A united Labour Party can deliver any candidate in the Labour Party because Governor Soludo has made things easier with his antagonistic leadership which has made it difficult for the people to desire him for a second term.
If LP fails to take advantage of the shambolic politics of Governor Soludo and continue to undermine itself and fail to unite, it may regret it by paying the price of avoidable disunity, which is losing a State that ought to be in its kitty.
DRAFT – Anambra@33: We will fulfil the dreams of our founding fathers – Valentine Ozigbo
On this 33rd anniversary of the creation of our beloved Anambra State, I celebrate with Ndi Anambra on this milestone.
Our journey so far shows that the dream of our founding fathers who fought for the New Anambra State which was created on August 27, 1991 was worth it. With sheer determination, resilience, and a strong belief in our collective future, we have made progress and silenced the naysayers. We are not where we would want to be, but we are not where any adversary would want us to be. Our State is a work in progress.
Therefore, on this anniversary, I join well-meaning people of the State in acknowledging and recognizing the role of Ndi Anambra at home and in Diaspora who have played exemplary roles in helping in the development of the State through the building and construction of Roads, Hospitals, Schools, Bridges, Industries, etc. As private citizens, these are the unsung heroes of our dear State and they deserve our commendation.
I also salute the foresight of our past heroes, founding fathers and living legends who envisioned a distinct entity from the old Anambra State that would stand tall and engender progress, unity, and prosperity for its people. This is the vision every of our leaders and citizens must do everything possible to deliver.
We have cause to celebrate. Anambra and its people have made giant strides in business, politics, arts and other professions. We have faced both triumphs and challenges, but we have also made significant strides. But we must do more.
Therefore, as we look forward to a better and brighter days ahead, we must restore hope and trust in government and governance. We must move from endless conceptualizations to delivering the tangible for our people. We must deliver not only on durable infrastructural development but also extend the frontiers of the educational and health needs of our people. And above all, our people must be secured and not feel a sense of abandonment.
Our State is blessed. We are renowned for industry, innovation, inventions and creativity. God has endowed us with all the human and natural resources to become a model State in all sectors. What is required is the ingenuity to deploy these endowments to generate employment, wealth and provide high quality of living and infrastructure for our people.
This is the challenge of leadership. And that is why we have no reason to fail. As the “Light of the Nation,” Anambra must shine so others can see the way. This is the clarion call as we savour this milestone.
Happy 33th anniversary, Anambra State
Ndi Anambra, daalu nu o.
Tackling Insecurity Must Be Priority in Anambra State, By Valentine Ozigbo
Once again, I am constrained to call on Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to live up to the billing of his oath of office and take personal responsibility and focus on the insecurity ravaging Anambra State.
This has become very imperative as the Governor has reconfirmed the spate of insecurity in the State. As he could not guarantee the security of the people he wanted to be at the wedding of his daughter, he had to move the wedding and reception venue to the nation’s capital, Abuja.
This is a crass demarketing of the State and has denied Anambra of the gains that would have accrued to the hospitality, transport and other businesses that were ready to benefit from the wedding had it been held in the capital Awka or anywhere in the State.
Clearly, certain things are beyond politics and ‘It-doesn’t-matter’ postulations. People are dying. Citizens are closing up on their daily lives while some are considering the option of abandoning their businesses and even leaving the State because there’s no assurance that they’ll come back alive once they leave their homes.
The once boisterous ceremonies and receptions Anambra is known for have given way to silence, or out-of-State celebrations as the Governor has clearly shown. Life is gradually eclipsing in our communities.
Truth must be told. It is only Ndi Anambra who are alive and healthy that can hear grammar of promises or commitment. It’s time we applied less of economics and heavy loads of common sense to solve this insecurity and get Anambra fully on its feet again.
A sacred Ózó initiation in Nanka was desecrated with gunshots, kidnappings and injuries and others scampering for safety. The following day, gunmen attacked a security checkpoint. Less than one week before, three prominent citizens of Nkpologwu, in the Governor’s LGA of Aguata were abducted on a Sunday morning and they are yet to be released.
Things cannot be allowed to continue this way. We’ve earlier called attention to this and offered suggestions which were spurned by the Governor and his cheerleaders on the altar of unnecessary politicking, which shouldn’t have been.
I therefore call on Governor Soludo to rise to the occasion and lead a coalition of religious, traditional, political, community and youth leaders in securing our dear Anambra. This is no time for dismissive politics. Action is demanded. That’s what we’re waiting for.

I Mourn Onyeka Onwenu, A Great Icon – Valentine Onwenu
It is with great shock that we woke up this morning with the shocking news of the death of Nigeria’s veteran singer, songwriter, actress, activist and patriot, Onyeka Onwenu.
The Elegant Stallion died on Tuesday night after performing at an event at Banana Island, Lagos, aged 72.
A great patriot who returned back to Nigeria in 1980 to contribute to the growth of her fatherland after her studies in the United States (U.S.) and stint as a staff of the United Nations, Onyeka Onwenu’s career crisscrossed the journalism, broadcasting, music, acting, politics, and public service.
She brought joy to Nigerians through her music, thrilling audiences with her superlative elegant performances. Blending genres such as highlife, reggae, and pop, Onyeka used her music to also address social and political issues, with some of her most popular songs, including “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” “Ekwe,” “For the Love of You,” “Bia Nulu,” “Ochie Dike,” “You and I,” and “One Love.” These songs are still evergreen.
A fighter for justice and lover of Nigeria especially the place of Ndigbo, Onyeka Onwenu acted in several Nollywood films. Recognised as one of the pioneers of modern Nigerian music, she received numerous awards in Nigerian society, including the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011 and is recorded as one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organisations.
A role model, she influenced a generation of young Nigerians especially in the entertainment and media sector. Her creative genius and uncompromising stand for integrity and justice will be sorely missed.
I bid farewell to this extraordinary Nigerian and great daughter of Ndigbo who was a trailblazer. The world will miss the passion, courage, honesty, and dependability she brought to everything she put her hands on.
My heartfelt condolence goes to the Onwenu family of Arondizuogu, Imo State, her family and children, friends, associates, and the Nigerian entertainment industry.
May the soul of Onyeka Onwenu rest in perfect peace.
ANAMBRA 2025: VALENTINE OZIGBO REMAINS LABOUR PARTY’S BIGGEST BET
By: Chukwudi Okafor
With Ndi Anambra growing increasingly frustrated by APGA and Governor Soludo’s handling of the economy and security, a wave of young voters are yearning for change. They are desperate to break with tradition and are turning to the Labour Party in hopes of finding a candidate who resonates with their aspirations and can lead them to victory in the crucial Anambra Governorship election set for November 2025.
Labour Party has a certain ideology and is approaching the Anambra 2025 elections with a clear agenda. While Ndi Anambra realize this, they are also concerned about the development of the state and local issues. They want a candidate who can address their problems, a candidate with character and reliability, unlike the current governor. On the other hand, the Labour Party wants to field a candidate with a strong chance of winning, with characteristics of integrity and performance.
An aspirant who possesses good qualities and a clean image is always welcome in the party. Labour Party needs that type of candidate who has a vision for the development of the state, who can lead the party to the forefront. I strongly recommend that the Labour Party should rely on such an aspirant. Undoubtedly, a party may influence a candidate, but a voter gets influenced by the persona of a candidate.
I wondered what was drawing young people to the Labour Party in Anambra and it turned out that it’s the prospect of Valentine Ozigbo as the party’s candidate in the next election.
Valentine Ozigbo has the demeanor of Mr. Peter Obi, and the young people see many of the former governor’s attributes in him and are following him. He is the candidate who closely relates to the young people, being a young man himself. His VCO Foundation, his role as Chairman of Feet ‘N’ Tricks, his avid love for and promotion of Freestyle Football, and his position as a board member of the prestigious WFFA (World Freestyle Football Association) also constantly keep him connected with the youth. He is the only candidate who has been very vocal about the issues bedeviling Anambra and has been offering solutions to Soludo’s quasi-solution government through his media series.
The Labour Party chieftain Valentine Ozigbo’s polling momentum continues to chug along, with 65 per cent of Ndi Anambra saying he’s the best choice to be Governor, according to a new local poll. The percentage of respondents who think the LP chieftain is the best choice to become governor went up 9 points since March 2024 after Soludo’s two years in office, with 65 percent of respondents saying he’s the best choice to lead the Anambra state government.
On core issues facing Anambra around the economy, health care, and security, the poll found a plurality of Ndi Anambra think Valentine Ozigbo has the best plans across all three areas.
If the Labour Party candidate were to be chosen by popular vote, the 54-year-old former President of Transcorp Plc would be the clear favorite. Known for his direct no-nonsense style, the former PDP governorship candidate in the Anambra 2021 election has said he is keen to take on vested interests to drive growth through digitalization, overhaul Anambra’s economic policy, and bring a safer Anambra.
When you consider why Ndi Anambra feel the way they do right now, there’s real dissatisfaction with the direction of the state, particularly regarding the big issues on their personal agendas – security, jobs, health, etc. Anambra voters have confidence in Valentine Ozigbo because they know he will never be persuaded or frightened by threats to his principles.
Anambra Labour Party can no longer deny it. The most articulate aspirant is surging in the polls, the fiery leader set on burning Governor Soludo’s one-minute solutions to the ground, and is the favorite to win the state’s next election.
If we want to win the war, we need to pick a man who will lead us to victory, someone who can advocate for reform and is willing to tackle the system’s faults as he is already doing in the interest of our people.
Valentine Ozigbo appears to be building a winning coalition that bridges different parties in the state. The election will come late next year, and when that time comes, Soludo’s team shouldn’t be surprised if they’re the betting underdog.
A number of potential rivals to Valentine Ozigbo have emerged in LP, including great men such as Senator Tony Nwoye, George Muoghalu, Paul Orajaka, Barth Nwibe, etc. This is a difficult road for the LP, but we must always go with the best option, even if it means deciding between several good options. We must make a choice based on what is best for the people and our great party.
It is clear that if we conduct our checks and balances in a respectful and objective manner, Valentine Ozigbo is the best choice for the position. He has demonstrated remarkable leadership qualities and has the appropriate strategy in place for a greater victory. He is a selfless follower and a good listener. He has shown us how unselfish he is and how unorthodox a gentleman he is to lead us into the future.
Despite these facts, it is the Labour Party that will make that choice. The enormous responsibility has been given to them. However, to win the Anambra 2025 governorship election, Valentine Ozigbo remains the biggest bet.
I have every confidence that Valentine Ozigbo can do what former governor Mr. Peter Obi did for our state, and that’s to build a more prosperous Anambra, a more secure Anambra, and a more united Anambra.
Happy Birthday, Dear Brother and Friend
Today, I am delighted to celebrate Dr. Stanley Uzochukwu, a prominent Nigerian business leader, philanthropist, and investor.
Dr. Uzochukwu displays his prowess in business with his astounding exploits with Stanel Group – a diverse conglomerate involved in oil and gas, food, entertainment, and real estate.
Notably, his Foundation invests in human capital as demonstrated by its annual youth empowerment summit, showcasing him as a leader who recognizes the value of investing in youth.
He recently established a masterpiece of a hotel, Delborough Lagos, where his pursuit for excellence is made manifest. I am a proud board member of this establishment and just recently, I had the honour of being celebrated in this magnificent edifice.
What sets Dr Uzochukwu apart is his genuine heart of gratitude. In our last meeting in Lagos few days ago, I met a gentleman who assisted then striving Stanley over 20 years ago when he was almost homeless. Dr. Uzochukwu went out of his way to discover this man and their first meeting after 22 years was in my presence. It was then that the reconfirmation dawned on me that the man I call my friend is indeed and genuinely a good man.
Nwanne m, as you embark on this new chapter of life, I wish you abundant joy, peace, prosperity, good health, and divine blessings. May your future achievements surpass those of the past.
I Mourn Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah – Valentine Ozigbo
It is with shock and a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of our dear brother, Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, the Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District in Nigeria’s upper legislative house.
Ubah reportedly died in London after a brief illness.
A man of a humble beginning, Senator Ubah showed with his life that one can transcend his limitations and with unwavering commitment positively impact of his community, State and country.
Shooting into Nigeria’s business sector as a young passionate promoter and Managing Director of Capital Oil & Gas Industries Limited, Senator Ubah’s ambitions gave impetus to young Nigerians that with hard work, personal conviction and doggedness, they can succeed in any line of endeavours they put their minds and hearts to.
His foray into politics followed the same visionary pursuit of service to his people, winning elections as two-term Senator. He exhibited the same exemplary tenacity which saw him investing in the sports and media sector where he made appreciable impacts.
He was an embodiment of the ‘think home’ mentality that Igbos especially Anambra people are known for.
Senator Ubah’s pursuit of dedication and passion for service and welfare of others in his community and society at large shall be sorely missed.
My heartfelt condolence goes to his wife, Mrs. Uchenna Ubah and the children he left behind, his friends, associates, his community Nnewi, the Anambra South Senatorial District, the State and the Nigerian Senate.
May the soul of Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah rest in perfect peace.
I Mourn the Passing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General, Chief Iwuanyanwu – Valentine Ozigbo
I join millions of Nigerians especially Ndigbo in mourning the shocking passage of the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu, CFR, (Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo).
Chief Iwuanyanwu was a colossus, a towering personality who bestrode the business, political, media and philanthropic sectors of the country. His pacesetting and focused life showed itself as a brave worthy soldier of his people, accomplished engineer, industrialist and a sagacious politician and businessman who at a point was the highest employer of labour East of the Niger.
As a student of University of Nigeria Nsukka at the outbreak of the Nigerian civil war, he volunteered to serve as a Biafran soldier, rising to the rank of a Captain at a very young age and was among the engineers that invented the multi-purpose Biafran bomb, called Ogbunigwe.
Through his Iwuanyanwu Foundation, Champion Newspapers; Oriental Airlines; the Iwuanyanwu Nationale Football Club of Owerri, and his other endeavours, he helped in inspiring younger generations in different fields of human endeavor.
As President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, he employed his administrative acumen and invaluable contacts towards offering selfless services to Ndigbo, coming up with various initiatives to reposition the umbrella body of the Igbos.
This outstanding Nigerian of Igbo descent will be sorely missed especially by those he impacted in the course of his life.
My condolences goes to the Imo State Government, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, family, friends, associates and all Igbos on this irreparable loss.
May the soul of our departed elder statesman Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu rest in peace.
2025 Governorship: Who is Labour Party’s War Leader Against Soludo?
By Madu Onuorah
Anambra State has always been unique in many ways. And next year 2025, the people of the State will be embarking on a watershed gubernatorial election, an election that is very attractive to many political watchers.
In the past, three political parties were always in the hot chase for the gubernatorial seat in the State – the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). But following the remarkable impact of a son of the soil, Peter Obi, at national and State levels with the Labour Party (LP), a major force has joined the three outstanding parties.
Following the entry of the Labour Party, pundits are almost unanimous that it’s even the party to beat in the State come November 2025. Going by the electoral revolution of 2023, not a few are arguing that a free and fair election in Anambra State will put the Labour Party in the front seat, even with APGA incumbency.
Next year’s election in Anambra State is therefore going to be a turning point because of what it represents. It’s the home State of Peter Obi who needs his party to rule his State for political pride. Even though his party not ruling his State will not have much electoral effect on his national performance, there are still a lot of advantages accruing to him if his party rules in his State.
It’s an obvious fact that in 2019 and in 2023 when Obi ran for national elections in a political party different from the ones in his State, he still came out landslide all at home. In 2019, as PDP Vice Presidential candidate with Governor Willie Obiano of APGA vehemently against him, the people still gave him over 90% of the votes, ditto in 2023 when Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo openly worked against him.
But that notwithstanding, the percentage performance, the figure garnered fell short of expectations when compared to the registered voters in the State. Electoral watchers believe that figures coming out of Anambra State could be more if the State machinery is channeled for his candidacy.
All the top candidates expected to line up for the Presidential race in 2027, incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of APC, Atiku Abubakar of PDP and Rabiu Musa Kwakwaso of the NNPP have their parties ruling their States. If Obi fails to install the Labour Party in Anambra State in 2025, he would be approaching 2027 psychologically deficient from the home front.
It is against this backdrop that all eyes are focused on the Labour Party ahead of the Anambra 2025 gubernatorial race. As a party rated to oust the incumbent Governor Soludo, whoever flies the gubernatorial flag of the Labour Party must be a critical character and outstanding in many respects.
Even though Obi’s strength in Anambra State and indeed nationally is more noticeable in the ordinary citizens, and not with the elites, but he still would need them.
So far, seven names are outstanding. They’re Paul Orajiaka, Tony Nwoye, George Moghalu, John Nwosu, Barth Nwibe, Chuma Nzeribe, and Valentine Ozigbo. Among them, a person like Senator Tony Nwoye, has his ambition fatally injured by the zoning formula to which Peter Obi and the Anambra people seriously adhere.
Aspirants like Orijaka, Nwibe, Nwosu and Nzeribe have not significantly shown their seriousness to Anambra people.
Another strong and experienced candidate hit by other variables is George Moghalu who is just joining the party. He may be seen as not truly Obidient at heart but just trying to take advantage of the strength of the party it did not support in the previous election. Such a person emerging may ignite crisis and disrupt harmony in the party for those who have been struggling with Obi for long in the Obidient family.
But the most visible Obidient person among the top aspirants is Valentine Ozigbo who flew the flag of the PDP in the last gubernatorial election in 2021 and is seen as the man to beat. Most Obidients at the grassroots in Anambra State already see him as the Labour Party’s candidate for 2025. His commitment and total submission to the Obidient projects at their inception might be a huge plus for him. He also enjoys the advantage of experience in the contest having come second to Soludo in 2021. In the race so far, he is seen ahead of others. He also enjoys what watchers say is a clean cupboard meaning he has a clean past. What his opponents see as a minus, which is his not being an aggressive character, might even be an advantage if you use the most successful Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as an example who had a similar political appearance when he came in 2003 when nobody gave him a chance.
The leadership of the Labour Party, especially its arrowhead and an Anambra son of the soil – Peter Obi, should be very wise in arriving at who emerges as their flag bearer. With Soludo playing into their hand with his quarrelsome administrative style, the Labour Party should not risk any mistake, more so avoidable ones.
Since the Anambra people and indeed Igbos and Nigerians desire to have Obi as President in 2027, the first concrete step is to equip him well by letting his party control his State. Choosing the right and popular candidate with less baggage will be the first step towards achieving it. To achieve this, Obi must not be evasive but assertive in arriving at the flag bearer and go a step further to harmonize the leaders to deliver such a person.
MAZI AFAM JOSIAH OSIGWE, SAN: Congratulations as the President-elect of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)
I write to congratulate you on your victory as the President-elect of the Nigerian Bar Association. Your emergence is a testament to your exceptional leadership qualities, vision, and dedication to the legal profession.
And your overwhelming mandate speaks to the confidence reposed on you by members of the Nigerian Bar.
I pray that your inauguration as the 32nd President of NBA in August will mark the beginning of a new era for enhanced professional growth and improvement of the quality of legal practice in Nigeria.
And with your pedigree as a former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja Branch (Unity Bar) and General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (August 2014 -August 2016), I also pray that your tenure will witness the revival of the NBA’s traditional role of enthronement of rule of law as part of the governance structure and upholding the rights and responsibilities of Nigerians as active citizens.
Under your watch as President, I believe that Nigerians will once again see an NBA that will earn the confidence and trust of the citizens.
Please, accept my warmest congratulations as I wish you a most a successful tenure as President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
Best regards,
Valentine Chineto Ozigbo.
My 54th birthday last Saturday kicked off with a thanksgiving mass presided by Rev Jonas Unegbu of Catholic Diocese of Awka. In attendance were family, friends, associates, admirers and stakeholders.
And all through the day, I received birthday wishes and prayers all across Anambra State, Nigeria and the Diaspora.
I also commemorated the birthday with widows from the 21 Local Government Areas of Anambra State. And through the VCO Foundation, we were able to offer these incredible women of courage some gifts including foodstuffs and financial token. It was uplifting seeing these widows smiling at the end of the day, showcasing their strength and faith in God.
I am eternally grateful to God for the abundance of His grace upon me in this journey of life. I also thank all of you who have become a part of this journey and has made it worthwhile.
And to all of you who reached me through messages, calls or visits, I thank you very much for the honour. You helped make my day unforgettable.
God will continue to bless you and meet you all at the point of your needs even as He makes all of our dreams to come through.
Democracy Day: Our strength lies in genuine collective efforts of government and citizens
Ndi Anambra, as we reflect on the significance of today’s Democracy Day, it is crucial that we give further thought to the profound importance of upholding democratic values.
This is because Democracy Day reminds us of our collective yearnings for inclusive and good governance, protection of the rights and security of citizens and the emplacement of a stable and peaceful environment where citizens can freely conduct their businesses and go about their duties without fear of kidnapping, killing or other forms of violence.
This means that democracy is more than just a form of governance. It is a symbol of our shared dedication to equality, fairness, and freedom. It demands responsibilities from both the people and the government towards upholding the law and holding one another accountable. This is necessary if democracy is to flourish.
I salute Ndi Anambra as we celebrate this Democracy Day. And let us remind ourselves again that Anambra State is the home of Nigeria’s leading democrats. This is home State of Nigeria’ leading nationalist – the first indigenous Governor-General and First Republic President, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe. This is the home State of late Second Republic Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme, who led the G-34 that midwifed Nigeria’s return to democracy on May 29, 1999 after more than 15 years of military dictatorship.
This is the State of Peter Obi, our former Governor and Labour Party Presidential candidate in last year’s election who revolutionized Nigerian politics and endeared himself to Nigerians, irrespective of class, region, religious or ethnic leanings.
This is the State we are proud to call our own.
This shows that Ndi Anambra are democrats at heart. Therefore, their expectation that government strictly adhere to rule of law is paramount. They expect all public officers to always remember that their role is to serve the people, not to wield power over them. The words of former U.S. President, George W. Bush: resonates when he said: “Use power to help people. For we are given power not to advance our own purposes nor to make a great show in the world, nor a name. There is but one just use of power and it is to serve people.”
This serves as a timeless reminder that any use of power outside the interest of the people leads to tyranny and oppression. Therefore, those entrusted with positions of authority must exercise their power with humility and a steadfast commitment to the public good.
Citizens, too, have a critical role to play in sustaining our democracy. It is our duty to stay informed, participate in the electoral process, and hold our leaders accountable. A healthy democracy depends on active and engaged citizens who are vigilant in safeguarding their rights and the rights of others. By doing so, we ensure that our leaders remain true to their mandate and responsive to the needs of the people.
Mismanagement of funds and the tendency for window dressing in governance are significant challenges that undermine the progress and development of our democratic ideals. When public funds are misappropriated, it not only stalls development projects but also erodes public trust in government. Similarly, window dressing governance – where superficial measures are taken to create a false impression of progress – betrays the trust of the citizens and hampers genuine development.
Therefore, government must prioritize the needs of Ndi Anambra in order to foster growth and development of the State and Nigeria in general. While this involves taking tough decisions that may not always be popular but are in the best interest of the people, investments in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities are essential for creating a prosperous and equitable society. Public servants must be transparent in their actions and accountable for their decisions, ensuring that every naira spent is directed towards improving the lives of the people they serve.
On this Democracy Day, we must remind ourselves that supreme political power still belongs to the people but it is given to their representatives, directly or indirectly, through the democratic process and representation. And it is given by regular conduct of free and fair elections. This power is exercised for the benefit of the people by transparent, accountable and responsible governance, which is what all Ndi Anambra are longing for.
In addition to this, we firmly believe that our democracy is not complete if we continue to resist the decentralisation of powers through effective independent Local Government administration. It is this right for citizens to vote for leaders to represent them and their ideas and both leadership and citizens exercising their duties and obligations that is part of the true essence of democracy.
In conclusion, the strength of our democracy lies in the collective efforts of both the government and the citizens. By fulfilling our respective roles with integrity and dedication, we can build a society where justice, freedom, and equality prevail. Let us remain committed to these principles and work together towards a brighter future for Anambra State and Nigeria as a whole.
Insecurity: End The Siege in Anambra, Ozigbo Tells Governor Soludo As Lawyers Bemoan Killings, Kidnappings
Labour Party stalwart and frontline Governorship hopeful in Anambra State, Valentine Ozigbo, has called on Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to use all tools available to his government to end the insecurity in the State.
This is as lawyers under the umbrella of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Anambra State chapter has lamented the spate of kidnappings and killings in the State.
In a statement he personally signed, Ozigbo said that urgent intervention has become necessary because insecurity is “crippling economic, social and cultural activities in the State.
Aligning with members of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Anambra State branch in calling for an end to the needless kidnappings and killings, he stated “as Edmund Burke put it the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’”
According to the statement: “Faced with the incessant kidnappings and killings by criminals in Anambra State, including their colleagues, lawyers in the State have sent a Save our Souls (SOS) message to the Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, urging him to step up and arrest the situation.
“The lawyers who had already declared a six-day boycott of court proceedings lamented what they described as a total collapse of security across all areas of Anambra State, bemoaning the needless killing and kidnapping of law-abiding citizens.
“They specifically noted the kidnap of a Catholic priest, Fr Basil Gbuzuo (who was later released), and the killing of Barr Peter Awa in Okija; as well as the killing of over 60 people in Ihiala within the last five months.
“The lawyers regretted that these criminal activities were no longer restricted to any particular time of the day, calling on Governor Soludo to provide solutions to the lingering insecurity which has crippled economic, social and cultural activities in the State.
“This video is an echo of the messages I have been sending to the government of Anambra State, who, instead of listening to constructive criticism and looking for real solution, just resort to mudslinging by their errand team.
“I align with the members of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Anambra State branch in making this call. As Edmund Burke put it ‘the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’
“Anambra citizens must rise to the occasion and speak out so we can sit down to find solution. The solution to this isn’t rocket science. We have dealt with this better in the past and there are Governors dealing with this better at present.
“Let us humble ourselves to both learn and collaborate. I won’t discuss full solutions here. But I can only assure that a better and more secure Anambra is clearly possible. Daaalu nu Umunne m.”
Ozigbo Clarifies Stance on Community Leadership and Governance in Anambra State
Recent comments circulating on social media have misrepresented the statements made by Mr. Val Ozigbo regarding the selection and election of local leaders in Anambra State. It is crucial to address these distortions and clarify Mr. Ozigbo’s actual position to prevent any further misunderstandings.
Mr. Val Ozigbo has immense respect for all individuals, irrespective of their educational or professional backgrounds. Any claims suggesting that he referred to town union presidents or community leaders as “illiterates” are entirely false and misleading. Mr. Ozigbo values the contributions of everyone from all fields who serve their communities with dedication and integrity.
Mr. Ozigbo’s core message is straightforward and advocates for democratic principles, transparency, and autonomy in community governance. He believes that:
Democratic Elections for Market Leaders:
Market leaders should be elected by the people they represent, ensuring leadership that truly reflects the will of the community, rather than being appointed based on political loyalty.
Autonomy of Town Unions:
Town unions must have the freedom to conduct their elections without external interference. No one should be compelled to belong to a specific political party to be eligible for leadership positions.
Independence of Traditional Rulers:
Traditional leaders (Igwes) should be able to conduct their affairs independently and confer chieftaincy titles based on consensus within their communities. The Governor should not use proxies to impose his associates in these roles. A recent incident in Anaocha, where the community’s decision to honor Mr. Ozigbo with the title of Enyioma Anaocha was thwarted by the Governor, exemplifies this issue.
Church Independence: Churches should manage their mission schools and hospitals autonomously, with subventions provided as per legal agreements, recognizing the crucial societal role these institutions play. Political maneuvering should not influence their operations.
Conduct of Local Government Elections: it’s over two years since the governor promised to conduct Local government elections but it’s still on paper. Local government elections must be held to empower grassroots communities to choose their leaders democratically, thereby ensuring accountability and responsiveness to local needs. The governor must desist from appointing his cronies into these position for electoral reasons.
Mr. Ozigbo firmly believes that when these democratic principles are upheld, issues such as brigandry, touting, kidnapping, banditry, killings, and theft will significantly diminish. Establishing law and order through these means is central to his vision for Anambra State.
Mr. Ozigbo invites all stakeholders and citizens to join him in advocating for these values as he campaigns for a more transparent, accountable, and democratic governance structure in Anambra State. Misinterpretations and intentional distortions of his views only serve to distract from the essential task of improving governance and community leadership.
Active Citizenship Panacea to Nigeria’s Challenges
Labour Party stalwart and frontline Governorship hopeful in Anambra State, Valentine Ozigbo, has advocated active citizenship as a panacea to the challenges facing Nigeria.
Ozigbo, who delivered the Convocation Speech at the 7th-12th Convocation of Tansian University, Umunya, Anambra State, on Friday, said that faithful citizenship is “is more than enjoying rights,” it also involves the activation of “the power to resist injustice in your society.”
Speaking on the topic – ‘Redeeming Ourselves: A Call for True Citizenship,’ Ozigbo said that Nigerians, as citizens, must realize that they hold within them “the power to shape the future, to lead with courage and compassion, and to make a difference in the world.”
Ozigbo noted that our duties as citizens “is about recognising our past mistakes, taking responsibility for them, and committing to a better future.”
Stating that “faithful citizenship is more than a title; it is a call to action,” the immediate Past President and Group CEO, Transcorp Plc added: “Remember that faithful citizenship is not a passive state but an active commitment. It is about standing up for justice, advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves, and working tirelessly to create a society that reflects our highest ideals.
“Active citizenship means holding yourself and, in turn, your government and leaders accountable. Society falters when leaders are not held to account, and it is our duty as citizens to ensure that they serve with integrity and transparency. To be a good citizen, operate within the law, strive for excellence, and let your actions be a testament to the values you hold dear.
“Each of you has the power to make a difference, to be a beacon of hope and progress. Together, let’s build a nation where every voice is heard, every person is valued, and every dream has the chance to flourish.
He told the diverse crowd of scholars and dignitaries including Senator Victor Umeh: “Our responsibility as citizens is crucial. The Almighty God has blessed us with abundant natural and human resources. If Nigeria is not in its rightful place in the comity of nations where it should be, the issue lies in our abuse of citizenship.
“You are equipped not just with knowledge and talents but also with responsibility. You must harness your knowledge, skills, and collective will to build a nation that reflects our highest ideals. We are blessed with vast natural and human resources, but these blessings come with the responsibility to steward them wisely and justly.
“Our nation’s future hinges on our ability to rise above the failures of the past and embrace a new ethos of citizenship grounded in integrity, service, and compassion.
“You have the power to resist injustice in your society. Faithful citizenship is more than enjoying rights; it requires fulfilling your duties with integrity and commitment to building a better future. The discipline and values you have acquired at this institution demand that you strive for excellence and make a meaningful contribution.”
While advising the graduates of Tansian University, Ozigbo said: “You are equipped not just with knowledge and talents but also with responsibility. You must harness your knowledge, skills, and collective will to build a nation that reflects our highest ideals. We are blessed with vast natural and human resources, but these blessings come with the responsibility to steward them wisely and justly.
“Today, I call on each of you, as graduates of Tansian University, to be the torchbearers of this new vision. I urge you all to embrace your role as active citizens and work tirelessly to create a society that honours dignity, justice, and equality. By doing so, you will not only redeem yourselves but also pave the way for a brighter future for generations to come. Your role in nation-building is not just crucial; it is your purpose. It is your purpose to positively impact society and contribute to the progress of our nation.”
Ozigbo advised the students that in order to tackle future challenges, they must be good planners who engage in scenario planning, tasking them to “prioritise your needs while pursuing excellence. Let your entrepreneurial spirit be driven by value, not just by making money. Many young people who fall into trouble do so because they lack morals in pursuing money. Do not aspire to make it through dishonest means. Quick money has consequences, and regrets often follow.
“As an entrepreneur who operates at the top in various sectors, I assure you that hard work and patience are always rewarded. The giver of every good thing is a just God who rewards us according to our efforts and His mercies. Without Him, we can achieve nothing.”
Anambra Workers Deserve Better
Our dear Anambra is in the news again for the wrong reason. NLC, TUC has issued a 7-day strike notice to Governor Charles Soludo to fully implement the 2019 minimum wage award for State workers or face total shutdown of activities in the public service.
They are also demanding positive action on six other lingering issues including the remittance of deducted contributory pension.
It shouldn’t have come to this. I call on the Governor to do the needful and intervene immediately to ensure industrial peace and harmony.
Every normal person would be appalled to know that while Nigerians workers are clamouring for new minimum wage in view of the prevailing anti-people policies of government, Anambra has not even implemented that of 2019.
Governance also demands that workers’ interests should be respected and protected and their working conditions improved.
Workers should feel valued and supported especially as they struggle daily to make ends meet. This means working to give them decent wages and better conducive working environment.
Workers and their needs should be given priority and be treated with dignity and respect. What NLC and TUC are asking for is not out of place. That’s what a responsible government should have done earlier.
Anambra workers deserve better.
