The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has explained that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) planned acquisition of 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack jets and 10 AW-109 Trekker Helicopters is to bolster its air capabilities in the ongoing fight against terrorism and allied crimes.
Air Marshal, who spoke during the Christmas luncheon with NAF personnel in Maiduguri on Wednesday, said that in addition to the recently procured A-29 Super Tucanos, JF-17 Thunders, and T129 Attack Helicopters, the NAF remains committed to enhancing its operational readiness with advanced platforms.
Emphasising that the current security challenges in the country require the use of modern and versatile assets to effectively tackle the situation, the CAS said: “We will continue to prioritise capacity building, personnel training, and research and development to strengthen operational efficiency.”
The CAS also urged personnel to use the Christmas period for reflection, gratitude, and unity, acknowledging their critical role in safeguarding the nation’s peace and security.
“You stand as the true guardians of our nation’s peace and security in this Theatre of War. I cannot thank you enough for your dedication,” he said.
Abubakar praised the NAF’s strategic efforts, which have successfully incapacitated insurgents, disrupted their operations, and reduced their capacity to harm innocent civilians.
He also took a moment to honour fallen heroes, stating: “Let me use this opportunity to remember our fallen heroes who have paid the supreme price in the service of our fatherland. We will forever hold them dear in our thoughts and hearts as heroes of society. May their souls rest in perfect peace.”
Governor Babagana Zulum, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, also expressed deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by NAF personnel.
The Governor commended the NAF’s vital role in combating terrorism and providing humanitarian aid in the northeast, particularly in Borno state.
“We cannot forget the timely intervention of the Nigerian Air Force during the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri, including Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance, airlifting of relief materials, medical outreaches, and other welfare programmes,” said Tar. “Your agility and resilience exemplify the true spirit of service to humanity.”
