It has emerged that the Department of State Services (DSS) deployed at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Alausa Ikeja following a request by the Assembly leadership to provide security at the complex.
The DSS had stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday morning, sealing offices of the Speaker and his deputy, raising tension across the State.
The Lagos Assembly management had in a letter dated February 14, 2025 alerted Security Agencies in the State that there was credible information that plans were afoot to forcefully reinstate the impeached Speaker of the State Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, on the 18th February, 2025.
This, noted the management, posed “a potential security threat to the Assembly and its members.”
The letter with reference number LSHA/FAD/0/7554/323 and signed by the Acting Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. A. T. B. Ottun was addressed to the DSS Director in the State, as well as the heads of other security agencies in Lagos State titled ‘URGENT: ENHANCED SECURITY MEASURES FOR LSHA PREMISES.’
Part of the letter by the Acting Clerk read: “I wish to bring to your attention a pressing matter that requires immediate action.
“The impeached Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly plans to resume to office on the 18th of February, 2025, as the Speaker, posing a potential security threat to the Assembly and its members.
“In light of this situation, “we kindly request that you take necessary measures to fortify the security of the Assembly premises with effect from Sunday February 16, 2025 by increasing the presence of your Men and as well observe a strict access control within and outside the Assembly premises till further notice.
“We look forward to your prompt attention Sir. Thank you.”
Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly met on Monday and suspended plenary indefinitely following the crisis over the deployment of DSS operatives who reportedly entered the Assembly premises and locked the Deputy Speaker’s office before the start of the plenary session.
This action led to a standoff between lawmakers and security officers, with the lawmakers eventually regaining access to the Assembly.
During the plenary session, the lawmakers addressed the “security breach” and passed a vote of confidence in the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
They also resolved to investigate the incident and report their findings to President Bola Tinubu and the DSS Director-General Oluwatosin Ajayi.
