Wike Contradicts NEMA, Security Officials, Says Mogadishu Cantonment ‘Abuja Explosion Not Caused By Suicide Bomber’

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has contradicted the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other security officials on the cause of the explosion that occurred in front of the Mogadishu military barracks in Abuja, on Monday.

NEMA had said the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber.

On Monday, an unidentified individual with planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) attempted to infiltrate into the sprawling Mogadishu Military Cantonment Abuja, on the outskirts of Asokoro off the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi Road.

But responding to questions from journalists during the inspection of some road projects lined up for commissioning to mark President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second year in office, Wike said the briefings he got on the issue shows that NEMA position is incorrect.

According to the Minister: ”The security never said it was a suicide bomber. So don’t go and create an impression and put fear in people. NEMA is not the head of security. Security agencies are there.

”What happened was that there was somebody that went to where we have these quarries, where they blast all these rocks.

“The person took the explosive and put it in his pocket. Of course, some of them may not even understand the implication of that and so, it exploded on him.

”So that does not mean that it is a suicide bomber. We should be careful in the story we are planting; let’s not send the wrong message to the residents.”

Meanwhile, a source had told Global Upfront Newspapers (GUN) that “the unidentified individual had earlier dropped off from a Golf car around the Mogadishu Cantonment under the pedestrian bridge, close to the military checkpoint where passengers usually drop before walking to take the tricycle (keke) going inside the Cantonment.

“When his movement become suspicious, he was stopped by the Military Police on duty and was asked to shift back for proper identification, only for him move few meters away and the IED he was carrying exploded, killing himself and injuring two 2 others.”

The source noted that the two injured victims of the explosion are currently receiving treatment in a military hospital while the corpse of the victim has been moved for further investigations.”

Reacting to the incident, authorities of the Nigerian Army said via its official X handle: “Explosion at Bus stop opposite Mogadishu Cantonment Abuja. Situation Under Control. Details Later.”

The details are yet to be released.
