The ambush, which occurred on Monday, was targeted at troops of the 145 Battalion, Damasak, under Sector 3.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the insurgents detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) before opening fire on the troops.

“The troops responded with anti-ambush drills, outflanking the attackers and neutralising many of them on the spot.

“After exploiting the scene, the troops recovered one PKT automatic anti-aircraft machine gun, one AK-47 rifle, four AK-47 magazines, a large quantity of 7.62mm ammunition, and two 36 hand grenades.

“Other items recovered included a Motorola battery, a power bank, a motorcycle, a rifle butt, 12 blankets, a motorcycle pump, a bunch of wires, and other sundry items,” the source said.

In a separate operation, troops of the 233 Battalion and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) of Sector 2 engaged insurgents at Sassawa village in Yobe State.

The source said two insurgents were neutralised in the encounter, with troops recovering one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, and 23 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

According to the source, troops have sustained aggressive postures and offensive operations to deny the insurgents freedom of action and to achieve the mandate of Operation Hadin Kai.
