The Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, on Friday met with a member of the U.S. delegation, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. The meeting was held on the margins of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
A statement by Principal Deputy Spokesperson of the U.S. State Department, Tommy Pigott, said the meeting “highlighted the United States’ commitment to a strong and enduring partnership with Nigeria.”
The full statement on the meting reads: “Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar today in New York City on the margins of the UN General Assembly.
“The meeting highlighted the United States’ commitment to a strong and enduring partnership with Nigeria.
“Deputy Secretary Landau and Foreign Minister Tuggar discussed several key areas of mutual interest including strengthening bilateral economic cooperation, addressing illegal immigration, enhancing security, and promoting religious freedom.”
The meeting between Landau and Tuggar was the highest contact between the Nigerian delegation to this year’s UNGA with top U.S. top government officials. Nigeria was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The U.S. delegation was led by President Donald Trump and had the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio also in attendance.
