Donald Trump on Friday again returned to a familiar theme – his dislike of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), saying he is “very disappointed” in the military alliance for not helping the US with the Iran war.
“I’ve always said NATO is a paper tiger.”
“If the big one ever happened, I guarantee you they wouldn’t be there,” Trump adds, apparently referring to a potential Third World War.
“They made a big mistake, they were not there,” Trump adds.
Trump specifically mentions Emmanuel Macron of France and Friedrich Merz of Germany, saying they are “friends” of his but criticising them for saying Iran is not their war.
“Well, Ukraine’s not our war, but we helped them,” Trump says.
Meanwhile, An attack on an American base in Saudi Arabia has left 12 US soldiers injured, two seriously, a US official has told Reuters news agency.
The strike targeted Prince Sultan Air Base on Friday. It involved drones and damaged several American refuelling aircraft.
It comes just a day after US defence secretary Pete Hegseth said Iran’s military has been “obliterated”.
It is not the first time that the air base has been attacked by Iran.
On 1 March, US Army Sergeant Benjamin N Pennington, 26, was wounded at the base. He died days later.
At least 303 US personnel have now been injured in the Iran war.
