High level naval staff talks are underway in Simon’s Town with the SA Navy (SAN) hosting its West African sister service in the form of a delegation headed by Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullah Mustapha, Nigerian Navy Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command.
Ahead of the talks, reported as being a practical expression of unity, co-operation and a shared commitment to maritime security, a formal welcome was followed by a guided tour of the SA Naval Museum, reported Seaman Casandra Moiloa of the SAN Public Relations Department.
Starting the formal welcome on 13 April was a courtesy call with Mustapha and his entourage meeting SAN Flag Officer Fleet (FOF) Rear Admiral Handsome Matsane. The call and welcome, Moiloa reported, created a structured platform for strategic dialogue, mutual engagement and professional exchange. It reflected the importance of defence diplomacy in strengthening bilateral relations.
Post the formalities and ahead of staff talks set to end on Saturday, 18 April, the Nigerian naval delegation called on the SA Naval Museum, also on the SAN Simon’s Town precinct, for a guided tour led by Commander Leon Steyn, Museum Officer in Charge.
A highlight of the tour was the submarine museum, in the form of SAS Assegaai, providing not only a perspective of life aboard a sub-surface vessel, but also the strategic significance of undersea warfare in the wider maritime domain.
“Collectively the day,” according to Moiloa, “contributed meaningfully to knowledge exchange, professional understanding and strengthening naval relations. Such interactions remain critical in advancing co-operation, enhancing interoperability and reinforcing shared commitments to maritime security in the region.”
