Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on Monday dismissed alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria, deriding U.S. President Donald Trump for acting on false claims about the country.
Mrs Dabiri-Erewa, in a post on X, however admitted terrorists are ravaging the country but insisted that Trump ought to support the country to combat terrorism and not “falsely denigrate” Nigeria.
“The perception is definitely not true. There are issues with evil terrorists in some parts of the country, no doubt. What @POTUS needs to do is support the efforts of our government in quashing them, not so falsely denigrate our country,” Mr Dabiri-Erewa said.
Lauding President Bola Tinubu’s response to Mr Trump’s declaration of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, Mrs Dabiri-Erewa said, “@NigeriaMFA has also issued a strong statement. @nidcom_gov urges Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to be united on this.”
In a follow up, Dabiri-Erewa said in a statement that Nigeria is a country built on tolerance, diversity and democratic values.
She said that the conspiracy theory depicting Nigeria as a country killing Christians in particular, is not the true reflection of what is going on in Nigeria.
“Nigeria remains steadfast in upholding democracy, religious freedom, and constitutional guarantees that protect citizens of all faiths”, she said.
Dabiri-Erewa said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the nation’s unwavering commitment to religious liberty and mutual respect.
The NIDCOM Boss said that the Nigeria Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also issued a strong statement on this matter, and urged all Nigerians in the diaspora to speak against the untrue perception
