Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been arrested for attempting to assault a police officer and using abusive language, according to a police source on Mykonos.

Two other men he was with were arrested on assault charges after allegedly attacking police when their mini bus was pulled over as it left a bar in Mykonos Town in the early hours of Friday.

The 27-year-old centre-half was ‘very abusive and aggressive’ towards officers when they were called by local residents because the group were not leaving the area – breaching a coronavirus curfew.

The £85million England international is believed to have spent the night in a cell after he was handcuffed and taken to the police station on the Greek island.

According the police source a group of eight men had left the bar shortly after midnight when it closed due to Covid-19 restrictions imposed on the island.

‘The group were very noisy and some of the local residents called the police as they had not left the area,’ the source told the MailOnline. Harry Maguire's girlfriend Fern Hawkins posted this Instagram snap last night with the caption: 'Holidays with you ... ♥️'

‘The group of men were in a mini bus and after the police arrived the followed them. The officers pulled the van over.

‘Two of the men got out and there was an argument and they began attacking the police. Maguire was very abusive and aggressive towards the officers.

‘He was arrested and handcuffed and taken to the police station on preliminary charges of attempted assault and using abusive language to police.’

Maguire, the Manchester United captain, is likely to have spent the night in a police cell along with his two friends.

It is thought the other five in the group were allowed to leave and return to their holiday villa.

Bar owners on Mykonos have to close at midnight or face fines from the Greek Government.

The police source said: ‘It is thought the group did not want to leave and were very noisy with lots of shouting.’

Manchester United said in a statement: ‘The club is aware of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos last night.

‘Contact has been made with Harry, and he is fully co-operating with the Greek authorities.

‘At this time we will be making no further comment.’

Footage posted on a Greek website shows Maguire earlier that night chatting with fans in the Matogiannia area of Mykonos town.

Britons were singing his name in the street and posing for selfies with the soccer ace before things went awry.

It is not clear whether that video was filmed at the same the bar as the alleged incident nor whether anyone else who appears was involved in the altercation.

His girlfriend Fern Hawkins posted an Instagram picture last night with the caption: ‘Holidays with you … ♥️’.

United players are taking time off after their Europa League exertions earlier this month.
