Speaking after 21 hours of peace talks in Pakistan, JD Vance said Iranian negotiators “have chosen not to accept our terms.”

“So we go back to the United States, having not come to an agreement,” he continued.

He said the U.S. had sought an “affirmative commitment” that Tehran would not seek a nuclear weapon, nor the tools to quickly achieve one.

He said: “Do we see a fundamental commitment of will for the Iranians not to develop a nuclear weapon… for the long term? We haven’t seen that yet.”

The U.S. Vice President added that a number of other issues had been covered, and insisted that American negotiators were “quite flexible” and “quite accommodating”.

But again,” he said, “we just could not get to a situation where the Iranians were willing to accept our terms.”

He concluded: “We leave here with a very simple proposal; a method of understanding that is our final and best offer. We’ll see if the Iranians accept it.”

But Iran responded to the peace talks in Pakistan ending without a deal with the Fars News Agency quoting one source close to the Iranian delegation as saying: “The Americans demanded through negotiations everything they could not obtain through war.”

They said that there had been disagreement on the Strait of Hormuz and nuclear technology, among other issues.

A source close to the negotiators also told Fars that “the American team was looking for an excuse to leave the negotiating table”.

Another news agency, Tasnim, cited a source who said “Iran is not in a hurry for negotiations”.

Both outlets are closely aligned with the Tehran government and has been described as “semi-official” arms of the state.
