Army Court Martial sentence soldier to death for July 29, 2020 killing of Lieutenant Ngorgi in Bama, Northeast Nigeria

A Court Martial sitting in Maiduguri, Borno State capital has sentenced Trooper Azunna Maduabuchi to death by firing squad for killing the Adjutant of his unit, Lieutenant Babakaka Shehu Ngorgi.

Maduabuchi was arraigned for murder after he shot Lieutenant Ngorgi in July 2020 at close range in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, for refusing to grant him a Welfare Pass.

The Court Martial on Tuesday found Maduabuchi guilty for the murder, sentencing him to death by firing squad.

The Court sat at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, Northeast Nigeria.

Lieutenant Ngorgi was the Adjutant of 202 Tank Battalion, Bama Northeast Nigeria in Nigeria’s war against Boko Haram/Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Troops of 202 Tank Battalion had returned to their base in Bama shortly after an operation against Boko Haram when Private Maduabuchi decided to settle a score with his Commander. He then fired eight rounds of bullets from his rifle at Lieutenant Ngorgi, at close range, killing him on the spot.

Ngorgi, who was newly wedded just before his murder, was buried on July 30, 2020 in Maiduguri.

Late Lieutenant Ngorgi graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy in 2016 as a member of Regular Course 63, and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army.

The Court Martial, in separate trials, sentenced four other soldiers for manslaughter after founding them guilty of the charges.

Sentenced to various years of imprisonment, Sergeant Sani Ishaya was sentenced to four years, Bidemi Fabiyi got two years, Private Musa Bala, and Private Abdulraheed Adamu got one-year imprisonment each.
