Students flee as bandits gun down 13 in Zamfara community, 17 in Nasarawa State

Students who were studying at a Secondary School in Damaga community, Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, fled on Wednesday when dozens of bandits arrived on motorcycles and opened fire immediately, killing 13 people.

And the same Wednesday, bandits hacked the village chief of Osewu community in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Abubakar Omazi, and 16 others in the area to death.

Sources said that the bandits invaded the community “in their large numbers armed with sophisticated weapons and attacked some residents with cutlasses.”

Among the victims was the vice chairman of the Vigilante in the community. Some of the bodies were recovered from the bush and had been buried in line with the Islamic rites.

The Toto Local Government Area chairman, Nuhu Dauda and some security operatives have already visited the community.

A resident said of the Zamfara invasion and killings: “They arrived at the community around 1pm and started shooting people. Students were taking lessons at the Day Secondary School in the community but on sighting the armed criminals, they abandoned the classrooms and scampered for safety. As I’m talking to you, the bodies of the victims are being recovered and we have concluded arrangements for their burials.”

The Police Commands in both Zamfara and Nasarawa States are yet to react to the incidents.
