Gunmen invade Awka, Anambra State capital on Sunday night, burn Police station, INEC office, shot sporadically for hours

There is mayhem as unknown gunmen invaded Awka, Anambra State capital on Sunday night, setting Police station and the office of the Independent National Electrical Commission (INEC) on fire.

Shooting sounded for over two hours as residents lamented and shouted from their building, appealing for calm.

One eyewitness wrote on his Facebook page from Awka: “This looks like mass robbery with gunshots everywhere. It is like we are in Sambisa Forest. Police ain’t licenced to more than three bullets per day. 100+ bullets wasted tonight on who and what I don’t know.”

According to an eyewitness, “the gunmen, who invaded Awka in three fully parked Hilux vehcles, radied the B Division Police station, Awka, setting building on fire. In addition, an unconfirmed number of police officers were killed.

“They shot for more than one hour at B-Division before leaving. They then stopped at Ekwueme Square and shot sporadically for about 10 minutes before proceeding to the INEC Office which set on fire.

Indeed, Awka is “boiling” as residents are running helter as they rush home or to any secure area or place.
