COVID-19 rate spikes as Nigeria records 28 deaths, 203 new infections

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 203 new COVID-19 infections on Monday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 166,518.

Nigeria records 31 new infections on Saturday and 30 on Sunday.

The NCDC said via its official Twitter handle that Nigeria also registered a record 28 COVID-19 related deaths on Monday., bringing total deaths to 2,099.

The health agency said that out of the total of 166,518 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 158,781 have been treated and discharged, 2,099 deaths recorded while 7,686 cases are active in Nigeria’s 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It said that the 203 cases were recorded in five States, including the FCT, with Benue leading the chart with the highest number of 178 infections, followed by Lagos State with 10 and Ondo with six infections. The FCT and Kaduna State also reported four cases each while Plateau confirmed one case.

It noted in its report that the spike in COVID-19 new infections for May 31 included a backlog of data from Benue and Nasarawa States recorded from February to May 2021.

The agency added that zero cases were registered from Ekiti, Enugu, Kano, Nasarawa, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Rivers and Sokoto States.

The public health institution said that with 39,818 tests processed across the nation in one week, the country had now conducted a total of 2,133,061 tests since the first case relating to the disease was announced in 2020.

It added that a multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC), activated at Level 2, continues to coordinate the national response activities.
