Tweet of Nigeria Flag by Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, in defiance of ban, excites Nigerians

On Nigeria’s Democracy Day when tens of thousands of Nigerians are protesting in the streets or using the social media in defiance of restrictions, Chief Executive Officer of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, on Saturday, tweeted the green-white-green Nigerian flag.

Already, the tweet has attracted thousands of retweets by excited Nigerians who see it as a mark of solidarity.

The tweet by Dorsey came just before the #June12thProtest started trending as the Number One topic on Twitter in United States and across the world.

The tweet also came just as the ongoing nationwide protest began in Nigeria.

Last week, the Nigerian government banned the operations of his microblogging platform over alleged undue interference.

The action was taken after the social media platform yanked off a tweet of President Muhammadu Buhari on Civil War.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information, who announced the Twitter ban, later accused Dorsey of raising funds for #EndSARS protesters.

#EndSARS protests held in October 2020 during which protesters took to the streets to demand an end to police brutality.

Many police stations were set ablaze, while vehicles in hundreds were destroyed and malls looted in the violence that followed the protests.

The violence started after soldiers forcefully dispersed protesters at Lekki tollgate in Lagos.

The Federal Government says it is currently in talks with Twitter for the ban to be lifted but it has insisted that all social media companies in the country will be registered.
