PDP crisis: The Rivers, Anambra connection, …and why the “coup” failed

Although Rivers State is the main brew house where the on-going crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was hatched, Anambra State has come to be critical in its developments.

Sources told Global Upfront Newspapers (GUN) that Chief Chris Uba, the Anambra State chief political gladiator against the PDP is the latest ally of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and that Uba has even turned the Governor’s chief driver for nocturnal movements in and around the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

This week, GUN witnessed Chief Uba chauffeur driving Governor Wike to the private wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The question in the mouth of every political pundits is what concerns Anambra State PDP with the fighting going between Governor Wike and his brother from Rivers State, the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus?

But GUN was told authoritatively that all the people who didn’t like the emergence of Mr Valentine Ozigbo as the PDP flag bearer in the Anambra State November 6 Governorship election appear to be joining forces with Governor Wike for the purpose of hitting back at Prince Secondus who ensured that transparency, delegates and not money determined the final outcome.

Governor Wike has remained resolute against his kinsman Prince Secondus as National Chairman because it blocks two of his great ambitions. The first is that the Governor intends to vie for any of the two Presidential positions zoned to the South by the party – President or Vice President. Second is the Governor’s plan to plant his choice successor to Rivers Governorship position without interference.

GUN gathered that to achieve these two things, Secondus must be flushed out to open the way for him. And the Governor is alleged to have opened the rich purse of the State for this purpose.

But a PDP source said that Governor Wike, even with his money, has been finding it hard to push through his agenda as leaders of the party at the national level have refused to allow the money or influence of any individual to sway them.

“You can see that the barrage of attacks on the National Chairman is derived from the anger of the key gladiators who lost out in the Anambra gubernatorial primaries and who are now transferring their anger on Prince Secondus.

“These aggrieved persons found a meeting point with Governor Wike whose interest and determination to remove Prince Secondus is unprecedented because of his belief that he stands in the way of his own ambition.

“But despite the well-crafted strategy put in place to forcefully remove Prince Secondus, they all crumbled because the leadership of the party are all in the know of the real selfish agenda behind the anti-Secondus project,” said a source.

GUN findings shows that the inability of anti-Secondus people to articulate concrete points against him is the major reason why the coup failed.
