Nigeria: Telecoms network shut in 14 LGAs of Sokoto State over terrorists, bandits attacks

Nigeria’s telecommunications networks have been shut down in 14 of the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Sokoto State as part of the efforts to check the growing terrorism and banditry.

Governor of the State, Aminu Tambuwal, told the Voice of America Hausa Service on Monday that the State sought approval from the Federal Government before enforcing the network ban.

Tambuwal said the affected LGAs are the most vulnerable to terror bandit attacks in the State. They include Tambuwal, Dange Shuni, Goronyo, and Tangaza, where 13 bandits were pulled out from a Police station and burnt to ashes on Saturday.

Already, the shut down of telecommunications network is in place in Katsina and Zamfara States.

The shut down in the two States and the ongoing military operations resulted in a situation where the terrorists and bandits fled to neighbouring States, including Sokoto.

According to Governor Tambuwal, “due to the ongoing military successes in Zamfara State, the bandits are fleeing to Sokoto.”
