Nigeria: Benue State people may soon resort to self-help over worsening insecurity, says Senator Abba Moro

The Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue), has warned that his constituents may soon resort to self help over worsening insecurity.

Senator Moro spoke while reacting to the assassination of a lecturer, Echobu Adah, who worked with the Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, who was shot dead in his car by yet to be unidentified gunmen along the Otukpo-Enugu highway, on Sunday.

Condemning “the gruesome murder,” Moro alleged that the federal government has been paying lips service to insecurity, saying that it seemed the Police are helpless on the security situation in Benue State.

According to him: “We are at the verge of resorting to self help. Communities are ready to defend themselves.”

He lamented that the local vigilante groups are incapacitated while criminals are sufficiently equipped to torment the people.

Said he: “The assassination of the Benue Poly lecturer is one death too many. He was coming from a community meeting when he was assassinated by unknown gunmen in the midst of three policemen.

“It’s like the policemen are helpless in this situation. They have been paying lips service to insecurity. Policemen are not well equipped to confront the situation. We need to recruit and equipped officers to tackle insecurity.”

Moro also narrated how gunmen invaded a Local Government secretariat in the State, expressing surprise that the invaders operated for over one hour at the scene without the intervention of the security operatives despite its proximity to a district Police headquarters.
