COVID-19: We’ve not shifted Edo, Ondo elections – INEC

The Independent National Elector Commission (INEC) said it has not taken any decision to postpone the Edo and Ondo governorship elections scheduled to hold in September and October this year.

The commission, in its reaction to a publication that it might postpone the two elections due to the coronavirus pandemic said it was mindful of the negative impact of the spread of coronavirus pandemic in the country.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, said in a statement that has not adjusted the timetable and schedule of activities for the said elections scheduled for September 19 and October 10, 2020 respectively.

“While we are mindful of the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic, we wishes to inform the general public that no decision has been taken to postpone the Edo and Ondo govemorship elections. We are also monitoring the various efforts by the federal and state governments, health authorities and other stakeholders to contain the spread of and eliminate COVlD-l9.

“If and when the need arises to adjust the timetable for the elections, same will be conveyed to the public in the usual manner. In the meantime, we will continue to study the situation carefully and cooperate with other stakeholders in the battle against COVID19,” Okoye assured.

INEC had sometime in March, postponed indefinitely, four scheduled senatorial elections in Bayelsa, Imo and Plateau States but said the postponement did affect the Edo and Ondo elections.
