DIG Egbunike Slumps, Dies of Heart Attack

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in-charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Joseph Egbunike is dead. He was confirmed dead after he slumped in his office about 7.30pm on Tuesday March 8, 2022 and was rushed to the hospital.

Egbunike was due to retire from the services of the Nigeria Police Force in May 2022.

He hailed from Onitsha, Anambra State.

His most prominent assignment was heading the Special Investigation Panel constituted by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to investigate the suspended head of the Police Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, over money laundering allegations.

DIG Egbunike held a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Accounting degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as well as a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons. ), B.L., a Masters in International Law and Diplomacy (MILD), and a PhD in Criminology.

During his National Youth Service Corps, Joseph worked as an Account Bills Officer in the Group Accounts Division at NNPC Headquarters in Falomo (NYSC).

Professionally, late DIG Joseph Egbunike belonged to the following professional bodies: International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); Association of National Accountant of Nigeria (ANAN); Nigeria Bar Association (NBA); Member, Institute of Cost Management (ICM); Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM); and Member, Chartered Institute of Fraud Examiners.

He was an astute financial manager and an apostle of good corporate governance. He is happily married and blessed with children.
