Nigerian FG Reacts To Senators’ Impeachment Threat On Buhari, Begs For More Time To Fix Insecurity

The Nigerian Presidency and the Federal Government on Wednesday speedily reacted to the six weeks ultimatum handed to President Mohammadu Buhari by the Senate caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to fix the lingering insecurity or face impeachment, pleading that they exercise patience as the President is working round the clock to bring the country’s security situation under control.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, told State House journalists after the week’s virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that the government commends the Senators for their patriotism and concerns, stressing that steps are being taken to address their fears.

Senators from the main  opposition political parties, including PDP, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party and some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have expressed disgust over the insecurity, threatening the President Buhari on Wednesday with impeachment.

The Senators, who visibly expressed shock and fears concerning the country’s deteriorating security situation, handed the President a six-week deadline to address the issue or face impeachment proceedings.

But in the statement by Lai Mohammed, the federal government said: “Resolution passed by Senators, as rightly said, it was passed when we were deliberating. But we thank them for their patriotism and their concern. But we are working round the clock, 24 hours, to ensure that the situation is brought under control.”

Lai however dismissed the purported threats by the terrorists to kidnap the President, describing it as laughable and mere propaganda.
