- Tinubu’s condolences came two days after Peter Obi’s visit to victims
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday evening sent his condolences to the Government and people of Kano State over the fire incident that led to the death of some worshippers at the Gadan village mosque at Larabar Abasawa in Gezawa Local Government Area of the State.
A total of 17 out of the 25 victims of the Gadan village mosque attack lost their lives, with eight others still receiving treatment at the hospital.
The President’s condolences came six days after 38-year-old man, Shafi’u Abubakar, poured petrol and locked in worshippers before setting the mosque on fire while they were observing the ‘Subh’ prayer last week Wednesday.
The unfortunate arson came as a result of a family dispute over the sharing of inheritance.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, on Sunday visited victims of the Kano mosque arson.
The LP Presidential candidate, who visited the victims at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital where they are receiving treatment later told journalists: “This is very horrific and remains very condemnable. It’s sad this can happen in our nation today. Nobody can say why this young boy can do a thing like this to his own family members and the society.
“We remain in solidarity condemning such act at the people. My reason for coming here is to show that solidarity and support in their care in one way or the other and the hospital management in what they are doing and again condemn this senseless act of violent killing.”
Peter Obi condoled the government and the people of Kano and urged all Nigerians to stand together to fight such senseless act.
Already, an Upper Shari’a Court sitting in Rijiyar Zaki, Kano, had on Monday ordered the remand of the arsonist, r-old man, Shafi’u Abubakar, who allegedly set ablaze the Gadan village mosque in a Correctional Centre.
The court subsequently adjourned the matter till May 31, 2024 for a hearing.
The defendant, who lives at Gadan Village in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State, was charged with grievous hurt and culpable homicide.
And in his condolence message on Tuesday signed by Presidential Spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu condemned “the act of arson, which led to this tragic development, and directs law enforcement agencies to ensure diligent investigation and prosecution of suspects.
“President Tinubu commiserates with the bereaved families, all those affected, and prays for quick recovery for the wounded.”
