NANS Calls For Federal Intervention Over Insecurity In South East University Campuses

The National Association of Nigerian Students NANS has raised alarm over the escalating insecurity in university campuses across the South East region especially the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka campus, calling for the intervention of the federal government.

Stating that university campuses in the region has been plagued by alarming rates of killings, shootings, and robberies, NANS stated that “the situation has become so dire that students now refrain from carrying phones or laptops due to robbery fears.”

According to a statement by NANS South East zonal coordinator, Comrade Charles Obinna Ijeomah, the students body “has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in university campuses across the Southeast region. Specifically, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka campus has been plagued by alarming rates of killings, shootings, and robberies.”

The statement released by Chris Onwa Mmaju, Chief Press secretary to the Coordinator NANS ZONE F South East: “At the 85th NANS National Senate meeting, Comr Charles Obinna Ijeomah highlighted the devastating impact of insecurity on students. Many have lost their lives, while others live in fear and panic. The situation has become so dire that students now refrain from carrying phones or laptops due to robbery fears.

“Comr Ijeomah proposed the establishment of military or security checkpoints near campuses to combat these insecurities and restore normalcy. This proactive measure aims to safeguard students’ lives and promote a conducive learning environment.

“The NANS Southeast zonal coordinator also emphasized Collaborative efforts between university authorities, local communities, and government agencies are crucial in addressing the root causes of insecurity.”
