U.S. Republicans scale back convention in Jacksonville, Florida due to Coronavirus concerns

The Republican National Committee (RNC) is scaling back its planned convention in Jacksonville, Fla. in August as coronavirus cases continue to surge in the state.

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel told delegates in a letter obtained by The Hill that only regular delegates, amounting to about 2,500 people, will be allowed to attend the first three days of the convention.

On the last day of the convention when President Trump is present, delegates will be able to bring a guest, and alternate delegates can attend, amounting to between 6,000 to 7,000 people.

McDaniel said the adjustments are meant to follow Florida coronavirus restrictions.

“When we made these changes, we had hoped to be able to plan a traditional convention celebration to which we are all accustomed. However, adjustments must be made to comply with state and local health guidelines,” she said.

The convention was moved out of North Carolina over disagreements over coronavirus restrictions.
