Nigeria: Anambra in turmoil as terror bandits kill 5 Policemen, Hon Azubogu escapes assassination attempt, driver shot dead

  • Naval rating, civilian, 3 Policemen killed Tuesday around Nkpor, Obosi axis

Anarchy has taken over Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria, as terror bandits unleashed another round of killings and destruction in parts of the State.

And with the development, all political party activities including rallies, meetings and consultations have been suspended as people are avoiding public places except for the markets.

On Thursday, the State was thrown into unprecedented violence as the terror bandits targeted the convoy of the member representing Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal constituency of Anambra State, Honourable Chris Azubogu in Nnobi area of the State.

However, Azubogu, who was a frontline candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship ticket for the November 6 election, was not on the convoy but unfortunately, one of his drivers was killed while another identified body was also seen at the location.

And in Ajalli, the headquarters of Orumba South Local Government Area of the State, the terror bandits burned down the Police Station and vehicles inside the compound.

Five Policemen were also killed and their dead bodies were seen in viral videos scattered around the station.

The terror bandits had a field as they blocked the Umunze-Ajalli-Oko-Ekwulobia federal highway for hours.

On Tuesday night, Dr. Chike Akunyili, the husband of the late former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyili was gruesomely killed in a point blank range.

The same Tuesday, a Naval rating serving with the Navy Outpost, Headbridge Onitsha, was killed at the Upper Iweka area of the commercial city.

The same day, another person was beheaded at Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the State where three Policemen were killed.

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State said on Wednesday that between Sunday, September 26 to Wednesday 29, over 10 persons have been killed in various areas of the State.

Throughout the State, campaign rallies and meetings have been suspended while people are being advised to avoid flashy vehicles or convoys.

In fact, any vehicle with siren or branded with any political party logo or anyone with government inscription or number plate is a target of the bandits.

As one source said: “This is a war against anyone who resembles a politician or government agent. It is also a war against anyone seen as seen as affluent or flaunting wealth. It is also a war against anyone in uniform or suspected of being a security agent. So, if you are coming into Anambra, the home of billionaires, you have to lie low and avoid any resemblance of politician or security operative. This is no longer an ‘Unknown Gunmen’ issue.”
