Nigerian Army again bars soldiers from taking photos, videos during operations, orders sensitisation campaign

The Nigerian Army has against restated its ban on soldiers taking pictures of taking videos of their operational engagements.

Towards ensuring that the directive is fully carried out, the Nigerian Army Headquarters (AHQ) has asked its various commands and units to embark on sensitisation of its troops on adherence to the policy initiative.

The Army noted that the practice of troops taking pictures of their operational engagements, which it said had become prevalent in recent times, contradicts Nigerian Army social media policy and portends dangers for the troops.

Henceforth, it said, the various commands and units must sensitize troops on the need to desist from indulging in such acts.

The Army’s position was conveyed in NA/CPAS/G3/7 memo dated October 27, 2021 with reference number AHQ DAOPS/G3/240/232 and signed by Colonel SK Bukoye on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya.

The memo titled ‘Need to sensitise troops to refrain from taking pictures or videos of operational engagements,’ reads: “Recent happening reveals that troops are still in the habit of taking pictures and videos while conducting operations. This habit has become worrisome as it goes contrary to the social media policy and also portends dire consequences, especially for the personal security of troops.

“It will be recalled that several directives have been given with regards to the aforementioned. This continued act, therefore, suggests the need for continuous sensitization of troops at various theatres.

“In view of the foregoing, I am directed to respectfully request you direct formations and units under your command to continually sensitize troops to desist from taking pictures or videos of operational engagement in their various AQRS. Please treat as important and acknowledge.”
