IGP Removes Adamawa Commissioner Of Police Over Role In Unilateral Declaration Of Aisha Binani As Governorship Election Winner

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, on Tuesday ordered the Commissioner of Police on election duty in Adamawa State, Mohammed Barde, to withdraw from the State with immediate effect.

The Commissioner of Police was among the security leaders present when the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa, Barrister Hudu Yunusa-Ari, unilaterally declared a winner in the Governorship supplementary election.

Yunusa-Ari has declared Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed (aka Binani) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Governorship election while collation of the supplementary election results was still ongoing in the State.

He usurped the statutory responsibility of the returning officer, Professor Mohammed Mele, throwing the election into a crisis.

The IGP also ordered that the Commissioner of Police in charge of Gombe State, CP Etim Equa, immediately proceed to Adamawa State for election security of the yet-to-be concluded supplementary governorship poll.

On Tuesday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) high command met in Abuja and decided to write the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba Alkali, demanding the investigation of its Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, Barrister Hudu Yunusa-Ari for possible prosecution.

INEC also resolved to write the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha with a view to acquainting President Muhammadu Buhari with the “unwholesome” activities of the REC and possibly reviewing his appointment.
