Nigeria Former U-17 Player Akinkunmi Amoo In Trouble, Sentenced To 1-year Imprisonment In Denmark For Sexual Assault, To Be Deported After Jail Term

Super Eagles forward Akinkunmi Amoo has bagged a one-year jail sentence in Denmark after a court found him guilty of three charges of sexual assault on June 23rd.

Diminutive 21-year-old winger Amoo was first arrested in September 2022 and released on bail one month later in October for offences which had been committed in April, July and August 2022.

The winger has been charged with rape in a sexual relationship other than intercourse, as well as attempted rape and violations of two more women.

Amoo will face an unconditional one-year jail term, and will be deported from Denmark after his jail term. He will also be banned from entering the country for six years, as part of his punishment.

The 21-year-old intends to appeal the decision as he claims he has been set up. It remains to be seen what becomes of the case.

Akinkunmi Amoo joined Copenhagen from Swedish outfit Hammarby in January 2022 and was called up to the Super Eagles squad for the FIFA World Cup Playoffs against Ghana.

Amoo picked up an injury to his ACL at the start of the 2022-23 season, forcing him to sit out the whole season. He was conspicuously missing from Copenhagen’s title celebrations after their league triumph.

Meanwhile, according to the Danish news outlet, the prominent football player faced trial for indecent assault, attempted rape, and rape in a non-intercourse sexual relationship. Three women testified and shared their experiences involving the footballer.

The prosecutor sought a 21-month prison sentence and deportation, but the defendant was ultimately sentenced to one year in prison.
